There are some good ideas in this thread but I see the difficulty in deciding on features & functionality because different users have different needs and ideas. For that reason and others I subscribe to the idea of keeping the core profile fields to a minimum. If I were designing it from scratch, I'd include only User Name, email, Display Name, Password, Comments Order, Notif. Method, Default Notif. Mode, Allow others to view email, Time Zone and Receives emails from admin. All others should be in a separate module or able to be turned off or on by admin. Site specific fields must be able to be added. The core and module model is fine as long as there is a way to migrate from 2.2, with site specific fields, to 2.3.
I have been frustrated, for example, by the inability to turn off Real Name in the 2.2.X Extended Profiles. We have fields for first name and last name so the real name field is redundent. Unfortunately, I can't prevent it from appearing as a searchable field, so people often get wrong results when searching under rean name, whereas they'd find the member if they searched under last name. You get the idea (I hope).
Anyway, I appreciate the fact that this project is going forward and that the developers are putting so much into merging the 2.0.X and 2.2.X versions into 2.3 (and beyond).
