As of today, I am no longer accepting new user registrations due to the number of spam comments the site gets. Sorry, but it's not worth the hassle. If anyone wants to contact me with a genuine enquiry, please use the contact block or PM me at xoops.org.

This is a major problem area. How can we deal with it?

There must be a better option than giving up!!!

GIJOE's module Protector (latest version is 3.11 beta) has some kind of SPAM protection for comment, trackback etc.

captchas. Worked for me.

incama, thanks for that link.

Here's the home page for the product that the .swf is demonstrating: botmaster DOT net

They claim to be able to defeat sophisticated CAPTCHAs.

Warning: You may want to be careful if you visit that site, especially if you're using a security-flawed browser such as IE.

Another interesting article about spam:

The Register: Webmail-creating Trojan targets Gmail

Dutch version is available here.

Yes sorry David for not mentioning the potential danger the site can and may behold, but after seeing/scanning the movie it looked alright to me.

Here's another article (from yesterday) about bots that register hotmail and gmail accounts as basis for the spam runs (sorry, article is in Dutch, maybe I will translate it later on)

Re: Spam and how do we deal with it?

When Dreamweaver first started the swf programing I signed up to be a beta tester. Back then a real danger layed in what could be embedded in the code. (logo, as I remember.)

After the beta testing was over I didn't go on with the next releases. But even now I don't knowingly click on .swf files. They aren't worth the risk from my point of view.
