When I edit mainfile.php to add:

include XOOPS_TRUST_PATH.'/modules/protector/include/precheck.inc.php' ;

if (!isset($xoopsOption['nocommon']) && XOOPS_ROOT_PATH != '') {

include XOOPS_ROOT_PATH."/include/common.php";

}
include XOOPS_TRUST_PATH.'/modules/protector/include/postcheck.inc.php'

I get the following error on my website

No, the definition is a separate line that goes in first.

Please read the user guide, the order in which you do the installation steps is important. You need to actually install the module *before* adding the include xoops_trust_path lines.
