Protector 3.02 question

Hello folks,

Just downloaded the new Protector module (3.02).
I've read the documentation and really looks good!

I've 1 problem though: my webhost won't let me create a folder outside the siteroot (for the xoops_trust_path)
Is there an alternative way to benefit from all the advantages of Protector? For example by putting the folder in a "hard to guess" place IN the siteroot and with a "hard to guess" name?

Do you have another suggestion (apart from moving to another host )?

Hi Ronaldus,

I take it that your website is in the "lowest" folder that you can access on the server?

If so then you can put the whole website (absolutely everything, but maintaining the structure) into a sub-folder. Call this folder anything you like, but its best to avoid "html" and xoops". You can then edit the "physical path" and "xoops root path" in mainfile.php to reflect the change and make sure that your site works as it should.

One working, you can then make a new folder at the same level as the folder in which your website now resides. This will be the folder for your "xoops trust path" for the Protector module.

You will then have something like the following structure:

website root/website folder
website root/trust path folder

And as you said, keep the folder name hard to guess with a mix of characters...

Right Chappy, I will make a non-guessable name.

1 question just came up, and probably a stupid one for the persons who know servers and stuff: how does "a visitor" know that the site is in this folder, in other words; how come visitors to actually see the site?
Isn't there a kind of redirect necessary, or are servers so smart that if they can't find an index file they look further??

Only for the trust_path directory - doesn't matter for the main website directory.

Not a stupid question at all, and the answer depends upon how your visitrs get to the current location.

Do you have a domain of the type mywebsite.com? If so the you will need to log in to the account and change the "website forwarding" address from the old location to the new one. Job done.

If on the other hand, your visitors come because you told them where to come then you have some work to do. I would:

1. Use the admin section to send an email to your current users telling them about the change, and.....

2. In the old location, place an index.htm file which automatically reloads/redirects the viewer to the new location. This will also help whilst the search engines update their databases.

I have a .htm file of this type which I'm happy to email across if you PM me

The forwarding option is the one that's appropriate for me. I'll dive into it.
The index.htm trick already came up.
I presume you mean a meta tag with a refresh of 0 seconds and a redirect to the new URL?
Otherwise I shall PM you.

Please bear in mind that is a draft - I'm waiting for GIJOE to clear it at the moment. When it's finalised it will go on the official docs site.

One thing that isn't in it: You need to patch your site in order to use this/some other GIJOE modules. Please see his home page Peak XOOPS for details.

@christian: thx, I've read the doc.

@Madfish: it's that patching thing I have trouble with. Especially with the forwarding of my visitors to the new folder my site will be in.
I PM'd JAVesey so I'll wait for his reply.
