A perhaps more elegant solution until there is an admin page added to edit default values is to edit the xoops_user_profile_field table in the database to have the correct default value (there is a field for default values).
I am not sure if this is even used though?

Has anyone a solution to change the default notification from "Private Message" to "Email" on new user registrations for 2.0.16?
