newbb boards getting spammed - killing my community

They way my cmmunity works (htp://www.clantunescape.com), I need to have public boards. My newbb boards are getting spammed all to hell and making new users go away.

at first they were only spamming this forum -
http://www.clantunescape.com/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=1

so i left that forum open and made a copy, hoping they would just spam that forum still and let my other forums be. but as soon as i did that, the spam spread to all of my public boards. I tried to ban them in the admincp. That didnt work. The I baned their ip at a server level. That didnt work either.

PLEASE HELP ME!

The simple solution is to disable guest posting.

As long as you have this enabled, you're going to be at risk from this.

thats always a good option,that and posting a message to new users asking them NOT to spam the boards, as its rude, unappreciated and a violation of private property. You open your boards to decent people, who respect your property, the site is not open to those that spam.

Appoint a team of Moderators that can delete and ban spammers as soon as they post, really, declare war on them, they will soon leave you alone and try elsewhere...

but having the guest account open is a bad idea....

You need registration with email confirmation as a minimum to post. If that doesn't stop it, go to admin approval.

As a feature request you could ask phppp (newbb Dev) to incorperate a CAPTCHA, now this won't stop all spammers, but it will stop the spam bots, automated spammers.

Now this feature could be optional, and with further settings to:

+ Turn on for all users
+ Turn on for non-registered users
+ Turn on for registered users
+ Turn off.

Or I suppose an option to enable this feature as a requirement for specific groups, enabling group permission use.

Just an idea, like I said maybe make the request to phppp?

Although not a total cure, it could be a start.

CAPTCHAs are used to prevent bots from using various types of computing services or collecting certain types of sensitive information. Applications include preventing bots from taking part in online polls, registering for free email accounts (which may then be used to send spam) and collecting email addresses. CAPTCHAs can prevent bot-generated spam by requiring that the (unrecognized) sender pass a CAPTCHA test before the email message is delivered

Man, I hate spam. My host just discontinued catch-all emails today because of spam. I had a great service offering free email accounts to my users and all it took was one catch-all per domain. They had to sign up for the services seperate from the rest of my sites but people loved it. Now I have to explain to them that their email addresses no longer work thanks to SPAMMERS.
