Could not connect to the database server?

I have installed Apache, PHP, and MySQL. Everytime I run the XOOPS installation I get an error at the "check database" screen.

"Could not connect to the database server.

Please check the database server and its configuration"

Why won't it connect to the database server?and if I haven't created a database yet, wouldn't it normally ask me if I want it to create a new database for me, cuz that's what it asked last time I installed xoops. I hope to get some replies, thanks already!

The details you entered (servername, database user and password) don´t work. Hence it can´t even offer to create the database.

Try phpmyadmin with the details you used in the installer to make sure they are correct.

Doublecheck the servername.

when you enter the table valuse be sure to include server prefix.

i.e.

http://www.yourwebsite.com (going with first 8 rule)

you would use

yourwebs_username
pass
yourwebs_dbname

Re: Could not connect to the database server?

How do I create a new database?I thought XOOPS automatically created its own database while installing xoops. That's what I had last time I installed xoops, but now it won't. Could someone then maybe explain to me how I have to create my own database, what needs to be in it and whatever else is needed in a database? thx:)

New users should always checkout the following:
1. Documentation - linked on the left. Specifically the administration manual - and for you - the installation manual
2. The FAQ section - linked on the left - specifically the sections on gloassry, beginners first steps, modules, blocks and themes. There are links to visual tutorials here.
3. The search function on the top right.
Please check also the read B4U post link below if you have problems.

For Visual tutorials please go here

You might also find this site useful.

Oh...and if you go here and scroll down to the section entitled database installation that may also help.

Re: Could not connect to the database server?

thx. I looked through those sites/links, but didn't find any information that could help. The only information I found in XOOPS FAQ was about for if having to create your own database. What name you should give it, and that you should ask you administrator to create a database for you. So I'm still stuck, but thanks for your help anyways! :)

" Oh...and if you go here and scroll down to the section entitled database installation that may also help. "

and the link to some page about creating databases just directs me back to this forum topic.

could you maybe post the link again. thx:)

Some host providers with Cpanel offer Fantastico which offers XOOPS as a feature and can be automatically installed with a database automatically created as well. This perhaps is how you did it the first time.

If you no longer have that option, you will have to create it manually.

Here is the link again from Jensclas' post earlier:

If clicking the link doesn't work this time either, then copy and paste this into your browser address bar and hit enter:

I personally do not suggest using fantastico to install XOOPS.

It is important that you famiiliarize yourself with cpanel, and creation/editing of the DB.

http://www.cpanel.net

Take some time and read the user guide. It is well worth it in the end. Focus especially on phpmyadmin and the functions of cpanel.

Try to steer clear of fantastico, as its pretty much a half-ass solution.

Ultimately its your choice, if you want to learn the ins and outs of XOOPS, take the hard route and learn, if you just want to get it up and running and dont plan on doing anything with it, use fantastico.

The best way to really learn something is to get pissed off at it.

Re: Could not connect to the database server?

thx alot for your help:) I do wanna learn in the ins and outs of XOOPS but I have a limited amount of time. I'm working for some company for school/college and as my assignment I have to learn something totally new for me for this company. Which was learning how to work with xoops. I have 5 months to get their website up and running so that's why I actually didnt' feel like finding out how to create a database myself. but After just having taken a look through how myPHP admin is used. I've decided to take sometime and try to learn how to create databases. it'll save me sometime in the future too. if you have any other usefull advice for me, all of it is welcome. thanks for all the replies in my forum topic!:)
