Greetings,

How do I change the "X" icon that appears in the address bar and beside my bookmarks?

Thanks

replace favicon.ico with a new one, clear your browser's cache, and rebookmark your website in MS Internet Explorer.

If you want a different picture in the address bar all you have to do is replacing the file favicon.ico.
A simple utility to make your own favicon is Adsen Favicon. This small uility let's you convert the image (jpeg, bmp) of your choice into a favicon.
For some more information about favicons, see Wikipedia.

And I think you can create one in any package - just making sure the dimensions (16 x 16) are correct, and save as bmp.. then rename as favicon.ico

I'm probably wrong though

No you are entirely correct in that. Any bmp can be changed to an icon file just by renaming the ending to .ico.
