I merged my test page into my real page - the idea is to let shop owners rent a little bit of space for cheap to help them promote their shops and I can use the revenue to help bring more shoppers into the site.

Let me know what you think of the new setup

I've been busy updating again. I made the navigation menu look better and I now feature the top shops on the main page. I had noticed that most people only click a couple of times and completely miss that there are often 100s of great products from the same designer, so my front page (and store pages) now feature the designers. Let me know what you think of the changes.

It's also been harder than I thought to get people to start coming to my site and clicking on anything once they get there - I am hoping the change will also help the search engines find me better with the new descriptions I'm putting up for the shops.

I'm experimenting with branching out a little. Two new things

In the astronomy section I have a flash panel that goes to hubble prints on zazzle where you can completely customize them - pick the size, the frame, the mat, the print quality, etc, etc.

http://www.cafeshopper.com/modules/cafeshopper/category.php?cat=153

And on all of the pages the design your own now takes you to the spreadshirt designer instead of cafepress. This is much, much easier to use to whip up your own custom shirts. Try it out, I think you'll have fun with it.

Which do you like better for the main page, the view by design or the view by shops (that uses the banners)?

I've added an internet directory to my site - a listing for your site is totally free, I just require a reciprocal link back. Link to a page in my shopping site, not the internet/web/shopping directory and I'd appreciate it if you browse to find a category that best fits in with your site and link to that. For example, if you have an astronomy based site, link to this page

http://www.cafeshopper.com/modules/cafeshopper/category.php?cat=153

btw: Is there a XOOPs module to do a directory like this? I used a non-xoops script.

just go to my main page and click on the "internet directory" link at the top of the page to access the directory. If I don't have a category for your web site, add it or send me an email - support@cafeshopper.com and let me know what categories you think I should add. I'm trying to somewhat follow the structure here

http://dmoz.org/

under the assumption they have thought theirs out - I will make exceptions, though, if theirs doesn't seem to make sense.

hmm - that looks cool and I may use it elsewhere, but I'm not sure it serves the purpose of what I'm trying to do here. The directory I set up is designed to get links to my site - both to help more people find me and to help increase my page rank for the search engines. The code I'm using checks for reciprocal back links and the links on my site in turn helps people find and improves the page ranks of the sites I link to. I just wondered if there was a XOOPS module that does something similar because I suspect a XOOPS module would let people maintain their own links.

I added a mailing list to my site - I saw there wasn't a good XOOPS module, so I just used PHPList. I probably should have done this a long time ago - it's a way to bring traffic back - from time to time I'll email out special savings for people on my mailing list.

I added some significant enhancements for the new sites, including larger thumbnails and searching. I'm going to have to add searching to cafeshopper soon. I came up with an easier way than I had originally planned to do it, which is why it's been put off for so long. What I realized is that there's really no reason for search results to look any different than the normal display.
