I have a problem on my XOOPS site with robots adding porno links as comments. On my site users are allowed to post annonymously and I don't want to change it. How to prevent robots from posting? I tried to block ip but they are using many different ip's. Could you help?

Your only option to my knowledge is to make it registered posters only...

What about "captchas" - before posting putting text from image? Perhaps it is already done for xoops?
There are some free solutions, but not integretes with xoops. I think it is usefull to implement such a mechanism here.

That would be a good suggestion, agreed.

there are serval problems with captchas so they should not been used without thinking about the disadvantages.
the most important problems are that professional spambots can read the most visual captchas without problems (keep in mind, your email spam protection also can read image mails) and for non-sighted users (for example blind users, or the color blind on a color-using test), visual captchas present serious problems.

there are some experiments on new captcha technologies.something like math calculations the user must work out or ASCII banners als captchas.

be sure, all these techniques just work till the spambots learn how to crack it.

I agree, but now I have to remove a lot of unwanted messages. And I would like to keep anonymous comments. So there is no such solution in any XOOPS module?

The whole point of having to log in is to prevent spamming attacks like this... so its the only option I'd personally recommend.

I use captcha on some of my other sites to protect guestbooks. It works well for that, and as yet no spambots have broken through.

Another method is to block the spambots in your .htaccess file. You can find lists of spambots on the net, just goolge "spam bots htaccess." I found this to protect a search engine from spamming for about six months. If another spambot comes along, just add it to the list, and the problem is solved.

Though the only sure fire way is to require a login.

DuGris has developed a Captcha implementation for XOOPS. It's athttp://www.dugris.info, with documentation on how to implement in several modules. It's called SecurityImage. I have my doubts it works with PhP 5+, though. On my local box, it spits out a fatal error which seems to have to do with PhP 5. Experiences very much appreciated.

Also discussed in several threads, for instance:https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=49873&forum=20&post_id=226486#forumpost220129

I think Captcha is an excellent way to reduce spam. Forcing people to register can be quite detrimental to overall life on your site. Sorry for the visual impaired, but I have to mainly think about how to lure the computationally impaired into participating in my site.
