Member's area includes:
* A Business listing directory page that display other members and their home/company contact info in alphabetical order.

This does not work for what I need. What I need should be integrated with members. If a member registers, he gets his info listed in the direcories. Like an extended classified ad taken from members profile information.

* Membership renewal application form.

It's a possibility. More on that below.

* Conference registration form.

I experimented with Events Guide quite a bit and despite nobu's attempts to help, it just isn't working right with 2.2.4 or something on the server. Even if it was, it wouldn't be tied into the conference registration page/subscription page. It would be an extra step and we don't need to ask members to reserve in 2 different areas or forms. It would be nice for the admin but members would surely complain. I think the same would apply for resmanager but I have not looked at it yet.

Public area includes:
* Business listing page for consumers to view, displaying similar info as in the member's only listing except no personal info displayed. Listings are sorted by locale/state, then by last name. Contact a member link via contact form.

Any of the directory listings need to be tied into the member information/profile somehow. As I said above, if a member has registered, his listing shows in the directories automatically. Listings would also need to be updated if modified by the user and removed automatically upon membership expiration. Xmmemberstats is almost what I need but would require much hacking in order to incorporate other information from profiles. I don't even know if this is possible. I posted but have not heard anything.

Contacting a member would be automatic if I could use Xmmemberlist. Speaking of forms... after trying all contact modules to no avail (I assume due to using version 2.2.4), I finally got Liaise to work but only *after* downloading a newer version from the developer's site. This has potential for the conference registration form but how to tie it in with payment in the subscription module is beyond me.

Also needed:
* If a member updates his account info, the business listings would automatically be updated.
* If member does not renew, he would be automatically removed from the member/consumer business listings as well.
* When a member joins, membership is activated by Admin.
* Track of membership expirations, send renewal reminders, track and confirm conference registrations.

This is just to get you started. Play around with the modules and get accustomed to them. When you have questions, feel free to post them. Like I said, we've ALL been there before.[/size]
The Thirdeye module has potential but the third-party plugin (LinkPoint) won't be ready until mid-May or so. Maybe later? I sent an email about doing custom work and I will email again but I'm coming to the conclusion that there's just way too much customizing/hacking to be done. What happens with an upgrade or security patch... would all hacked modules fail?
I thank you for the time you spent answering. I took your advice and have worked hard at it for 2+ days, loading countless modules. So far, it is looking grim and I can expect no compensation if XOOPS will not work for this client. If this were my own site, it wouldn't be so bad. Perhaps I can use what I've learned for the future but for now... I don't know.
I think the whole thing rests upon whether Thirdeye software can help with customizing and I'm having my doubts about that. Perhaps because I've had little sleep and mountains of frustration.
Thanks anyway.
