About the time I decided I had enough with this trackback prOn, someone else posted about it and I have been following the thread. Over at lobby4linux, we get hammered with these things. I am disabling our weblog section until someone can get this fixed. Some of the posts are 3350 links long and I don't have half a day to delete them one by one.

Has anyone found a way to delete them enmass? Thank you for the lists below, I will try them to see if they can stop these posts. They almost make it not worth running a XOOPS site.

to delete them all use phpmyadmin...there is a module for this if you don't have direct access via your webserver,

my server is linux running cpanel and so it is already installed

In phpmyadmin find your XOOPS database and browse it, this will list all the parts of the database and then look for the weblogtrackback part of this data base, in phpmyadmin you put a tick next to weblogtrackback and 'empty' it this will remove all trackbacks including any good ones, but it has to be done.

I haven't made my blog private, as this defeats the object

I have been looking at a wordpress plugin that blocks trackback spam but do not know how to port it

there is more about it at http://www.xoopsforge.com in the wordpress module forum

Thanks for the answer Macmend...I stumbled around cpanel until I figured it out. I ran back here to let everyone know but you had already posted the answer. You are right...I get frosted when I want to comment to something and have to register. I now understand why people make this a priority...but neither will I make it private. Making folks register is bad enough and I explain why we do it on our front page. Making it private is preaching to the choir in my case.

Thanks again

On bylaugh.org I simply renamed the weblog-tb.php file to something random and blocked the IP range - it stops all trackbacks and shows a 404 error.

edit-

He's just been on again and this is the result:

Lot's of 403's until he tries another IP and then lots of 404's.

Well the IP banning has stopped the porn trackback but I am still being spammed on more general topics and what else ASm I blocking when i put the IPs on ban??

So I had a little look around the world of php and blogs and I reckon by editing the .htaccess file and using http referrer blocks you can put a partial stop to it...now there are two types of block and i have used them both....not sure if they will work ok together...you tell me but having borrowed some code and looked at recent trackbacks i came up with this:

*** SNIP ***

Hey, macmend, did that end up working for you? If so, I'll be sure to throw it on.

unfortunately not fully tested, as my hosts introduced PHPSuexec as a security measure and htaccess didn't work properly after that, I have to use php.ini.

as far as I can see it helped and there is alot you can do with htaccess to restrict spam, a search across the web, will show the htaccess route to stopping trackback and comment spam.

In the end I converted my whole site to the wordpress blog module, which is a pity, but works well enough.
