How come I cant upload the themes?

I cant seem to download any new themes because they are not in .tar.gz/.tar format ... all of them are in winzip.

Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem?

Sure

You're mixing up 'themes' and 'templates'.
The theme files define the general layout of the whole website, and should be extracted locally, and the files uploeaded via your FTP application of choice to the themes/ folder.
Templates define the module specific layout, and the default template set is used normally. If you want to make changes there, you need to clone the default set, and edit the cloned set via the templates manager.

I hope that makes sense

You just have to upload the theme files from the zip archive to the themes/ folder.

If you use Windows, you can download the freeware program Filzip and extract .zip archives with it.

If you use Mac (OS X or later) or Linux, you should be able to extract the archive using the unzip command in a terminal (command prompt).

The syntax should go like so...

name@host> unzip filname.zip

Thank you guys! It clarifies.
Do you happen to know where I can download a ready made template?
I am new to XOOPS and I really dont know how to make any changes. For instance, how can I change the name of the module 'SMF Module for Xoops' to a name I desire?
Appreciate some pointers to start off ...

You don't *need* to get a new template set, the default template set is applied to all modules (or modules come with a default template set, I should say).

The module name you can change in system admin -> modules, the module names are shown in the textboxes. Change them and click 'go' to update them.
