I can't seem to get a "Recent News" block to display to any user including webmaster. I created a block for "Recent News" through block admin. It's set it to Center Block -- Center, visible, Top Page, and visible to all user groups. I've set block and module access/admin for "News" and "Recent News" for all users, even anonymous, to yes...I did this through the groups admin page. I made sure I created/approved a new news story under the news topic I selected for the block I made for it.

None of this works, however. The block just doesn't appear when I go to my top "home" page. Other blocks that I have set up exactly the same (custom block and RSS Feed block) display perfectly. Also, news blocks other than Recent News will display fine...the problem is only with Recent News blocks. I enabled PHP debug mode, but there are no errors.

Also, I can access the main page of the news module by typing it in the address bar: http://www.example.com/modules/news

Any ideas as to what I'm missing?

I had a similar problem. Edit the recent news block via blocks in the admin section, at the bottom of the recent news block screen you will see a list of categories you have created.

Highlight all the categories from which you want to display recent news, the block should then display normally.

Wow, something so simple...and so frustrating.

Thanks so much for the quick help! Works great!

Re: News Module Recent News problem!

I have also run into the same problem with recent news and XOOPS 2.2. I searched through the forums and tried the suggested fixes. Selected categories and checked permissions but no articles show in the box. I've followed the upgrade txt in the past and reinstalled the module. Recent news still won't show.

You can view the recent items block here http://www.nuoss.org.uk, third from the top. I've run php debug but no errors are showing. Anyone have any further suggestions?

I think I may have found the problem. I tried to modify the news_block_top.html template and found it empty. Can anyone confirm this as correct?

You might look here -

I don't know if it was fixed with 1.43 or anything to about X2.2 - but in 1.42 this was the problem I was having with that block.

I tried that fix earlier but no luck:( It seems that template is corrupt on ours. Default is showing empty too. Tried deleting and uploading a new copy of the template. Entered the *void* too.

Resolved the problem, I removed the recent items block, updated news again which removed the block, re-enabled the block, updated news once again and the block showed. weird:|

I've got the similar problem but instead of changing the xoops_version.php this is what I've done.

System Info:
Xoops 2.2.4 (patch from 2.2.3a)
News 1.4
Template set is cloned

Problem:
The Recent News block and Random News block appear blank or no content, just only the border of block.

Debug Info:
Template 'news_block_top.html' is not found

What I've done
1. go to Module Administration and update News module
2. go to Template set manager, select 'News (10)'
3. There are about 4 templates that appear to have no file. they are highlighed in yellow.
4. Select browse at each template that has no file
5. Choose appropriate template file in modules/news/templates/blocks
6. Click upload
7. Now, in Template Set Manager, it shows 'News (14)'
8. Everything work as it should be.

Enjoy
