Backing Up the Xoops.Org MySQL Database

Just curious...if the XOOPS database is about 1Gb in size (a PM from Mith informed me of this) how is it backed up by the XOOPS team who are not actually physically located near the servers (which are in Holland I think?). It can't be using phpMyAdmin or any other remote web tool due to the 90 second time out etc. I assume they take daily backups which must be a big job. Do they just have an arrangement with PlanetXoops?

The only reason I ask is if\when my own databases get any larger than 100Mb or so I won't be able to do my own backups because the sites are commercially hosted.

Not sure if this is how it is done, but see my article:

Regular Database Backup with Cron(Updated)

This is how it can be done. Also see MySQL Database Restore. If there is no access to the CLI, Cron also can be used to restore a large database.

I find this the best solution for grabbing/restoring large databases that are remotely hosted.

I use Bigdump sometimes to restore a large table.
Recently I tried to restore the ip-to-country table (iptoc) for xmmemberstats but found that Bigdump had problems with country names containing an apostrophe, like Cote d'Azure.

How about the module BackPack for making backups(http://www.bluemooninc.biz/~xoops2/modules/news/article.php?storyid=18)?

I know that on the Malaysian support site a module for backing up MySQL databases was available, but their site seems to be down.

For those of us that do not have access to cron (shared hositing) is their away to automate backups using XOOPS itself? I've found that many backup solutions fail to restore AMS on our shared server.

cPanel, Plesk and other shared hosting control panels should give you access to cron. If not there are some modules in the repository to backup the database. But it will have to be done manually.

I tried the backpack module with xoops-2.2.3. Backed up and restored the database without any problems. Thankyou:) But this module should really have the ability to save to the server as well as remote.

Yes! My site is down right now. Due to HDD crash. XOOPS Malaysia will be back on track as soon as we can.

since we have a dedicated server, backups are made daily (or nightly, as the servers are located in the US, the XOOPS Foundation is based in the Netherlands -makes jurisdiction on who to report the hack attack to a nice case ), by cronjob. It just grabs the whole db and files into a tarball, saves it to a dics and is stored by Ackbarr

Thanks Herko for that clarification. I did not realise you had a dedicated server all of your own. In my case my sites are hosted on commercail servers so are just some of hundreds hosted there. In the meantime I'll look into BigDum as suggested by the rather attractive Goober early on in this post (her site is a fine demonstration of Xoops!)
