My question is this what would I look for in the style sheet, because the template works well with all other modules?

I think it's itemhead and itemtitle you need to look at changing

I Think what is missing is the Backgound color.

Bluenova is right. It is .itemhead.

Find this line about 25 lines from the top of your style.css file.

could it be that the news module does not use the Tags?

The problem with Horatio solution is that it is just changing the text color.

If you follow my solution it will change the background color. I know it works I used firefox and test on your site in real time.

To change the background-image:
