Today, my website vanished, poof, without trace. The main page became a directory listing.
I FTP in, it's all gone. I ring my provider, no it's there.
I log on via SSH and sure enough, the files are there. Anyone got any idea how to get them back so they're available via FTP and HTTP?

I've already tried CHModin the entire site back to 755.

It's your hoster's Apache misconfiguration
Try to view /index.php directly in browser

If you'll see nice page - admin forgot to add index.php into directory index directive (you can change nothing)
If you'll see PHP page source - admin lost mod_php (you can change nothing also).

Allow directory listing is one more, last and worsest error

Maybe this will shed some light on the problem.
I can't see the files;
Via http
Via ftp

I CAN see the files;
Via SSH terminal
Via File Manager with Cpanel.

So they're all still there. but I can't see them outside of cpanel.

When I use Putty to view the files, each file has a * after it's name. Anyone know what that means?

The name had pointed to a different web space. Problem solved? Not really. I terminated the account and recreated it. After the problem, I took a backup using db_backup, which I guess has backed up this mysteryous version of the database which it somehow found. Oh dear... I'll have long and hard for a usable backup of the site, if I have one. That'll teach me.
