Hi,

Isn't it a bit ironic for a cms to have its parts marked out from one another by their functions rather than content?

Therefore, I wonder, whether or not there is an overall categories module somewhere, and I just didn't find it..(?)

A module that, for example, allow users to view political news information together with political t-shirts and blogs, etc... (Could also assist in having a "what's related" block..?)

A long time ago I had the MetaCat module made. That is basically a global category manager, with a related items block, but it's not super duper userfriendly.

Perhaps you can find it somewhere?

Have seen it before, but persuaded myself it was to do with metatags... I will have a look at it..

"Long ago" makes it sound like there wasn't much demand for such a module..?

Hummm... Maybe it wasn't much used due to befriending difficulties..?

How much will it cost to hack the module so it:

a - Recognises installed modules and provides option to meta-categorise them?
b - Has a block displaying categories?
c - Has a block displaying related categories?

(Any such hack will be offered freely to the community..)

b and c are probably the easy part. One of the reasons why a is not done yet and why it is not part of the core is that the "recognising modules and provide options" is very difficult if it is to be done right.

It would be awesome if someone can make it happen, but my plans for the XOOPS core is to provide a generic category class that can be implemented in modules for sharing categories across modules.

Hummm... Do you think the introduction of categories in XOOPS core will be in a future far far away - or are we talking months..?
One doesn't want to pull a car with a horse if the engine works just fine..

we are talking 3-4 months (late September or early October)

But after that it would have to be implemented in the modules to use the categories...

Didn't fully get the horse analogy (I agree with it, but what's the relevance to this case )

Probably a bit of a misunderstanding...
Thought the core development meant that it will be easier to implement categorisations. Hence, thinking of the hard work you mentioned to do with making a module that will do just that - produced an analogy..

All of which leads me to inquire whether or not paying a programmer to hack the module, might represent a bit of a waste as there are far more fun and contributory things s/he could do with their time..(?)

If you can get a programmer to (successfully) create a module that can categorise items in another module without changing that other module, the money would be well spent.

But creating a module for managing categories and then having to implement the categories (e.g. replacing topics in News or Newbb/CBB categories with these categories) would probably be a waste as that is what I have in mind for XOOPS 2.4

However, if you want to see where it will lead (and perhaps ease my burden for 2.4) I would be thrilled. Less work, a basis to build on, more eyes looking at the code = I'm all for it.

Depends on your need and cash balance, I guess
