i found out the hard way by myself with no assistance.

uninstall what you have now. please.

you need ( Article Management System 2.2 ) first.

http://www.it-hq.org/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=9

and then 2.41 - both can got from this page.

as i said - been there - got mine to work by that route.

and it works fantastic - is a great module.

You shouldn't need to install AMS 2.2 first to get AMS 2.41 to work. When you go into the AMS admin panel, you do not have an "Add a topic" section under topics manager?

you shouldnt have to - i agree... but the only way it worked for me was to install the previous version first - then the last version.

tried the suggestion. it worked up to a point. all the menu items in admin can be seen as expected (visible) but cannot save options that i change. nor can i post new topics.
the debug message says something about a possible clash with url_rewrite.

i use the simplified urls hack. could this be the problem? anyway, i have included ams in the list of modules that are exempted in the hack.

any thoughts? It is a great module>

thanks a lot for taking the time.

Thank you. I fixed it following kgmetcalfe's suggestion, going through the whole installation process for each version of the module, upgrading at each stage. i do not know if it was a bug but it worked, unusual as the method seemed.

it is an excellent module. again my thanks.
