Hi all, sorry this seems like a basic question.

We use spotlight module on our site, (but it is older)
Recently we decided to start organizing our news better.

So we created subtopics.

Unfortunatley, the spotlight module isnt working as planned. I figured the spotlight would still pull into rotation from a main topic area (and all of its subtopics), But it only pulls from each specific topic.

ie_(for example)

Topic
---News
(sub)--Domestic
(sub)--Foreign
--Fake News
--Boring News

I figured if this were the case the spotlight would still rotate articles from the main topic (in this example News)along with ones from the sub-topics but no.

-Using the standard News Module and
-An older spotlight (prior 1.4)

I went to download latest spotlight and boy did I get confused. There are so many now. Was this issue ever fixed in the standard spotlight Module. Its worked so well for us, but the subtopics. It was so simple Im just not sure which to get.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hi

The issue isnt with spotlight, but with news. There is no functional difference between categories and subcategories.

Hmmmm
I was hoping it wasnt the News.
I see subcategories in news then are useless if they are simply applied unique ID's as regular topics are. (Though it does still help for organization.
)

I had a feeling the wf series of "stuff" would have to be the answer. But, I guess we will just have to figure an unabrubt way to move to such a format.

As much as I love the WF series, its far too complex for this basic area (we do use it elsewhere however). We will see if we can figure out an alternative and share results.

Thanks all. Appreciate it!

Damn I guess not!

Ah well, just will have to rethink this.
Thanks alot, you saved us a lot of time by mentioning it wasnt possible because of News and not the spotlight!

Thanks!

wow a year later, just came across this post because I was looking to see if there was ever a resolution to the following issue sorry to bring up such an old issue..

"There is no functional difference between categories and subcategories."

Which keeps our spotlight from working the way we want it too.

--so it seems like it will never happen.

So, we have so many news articles, is it possible to imprt them to another module like focus or any other news module that will support the spotlight feature.

OR, being not afraid to get them hands dirty is there something we can do to modify the news module (1.44) so that the ol' hard and true spotlight picks up subcategories, beneath their primary ones?

ie: Selected spotlight topi is:
A
-sub a
sub b
B
Currently it would only rotate A without a and b,and only a,b if they were selected individually themselves.

(?!hmm did that make any sense?)
Well,
Thanks in advance.

~Sorry another late nite, last minute thought. But sure would love to get it going right.
