Hey all,
Ok I have but a simple request. I need some information on whether I can or can not manipulate the URL address bar.
I have used my isp's space to host XOOPS (as apposed to my home server) and set it up so that it may work.
However the downside to this is that you have to look at a totally disgusting url address in the address bar.
Currently it reads as follows;

http://cgi.myusername.myprovider.com

I am wanting to manipulate this to show;

http://www.mydomainname.co.uk

The thing I have to bear inmind here is that when you click on a link within the XOOPS framework it will go to http://cgi.username.provider.com but for the viewer replace this with the domain name without affecting the linking etc.
I know I dont make too much sense. But if anyone out there should know how i can achieve this then please please let me know.

All the best Tom.

Hi Tom,

I do not think that will be possible unless you have your ISP manage this in the DNS (Domain Name Server). I am not sure what kind of tools your ISP is using but I would contact your ISP and ask if this is possible.

Regards,

Martijn

Tom, do you own http://www.mydomainname.co.uk? If so, you can simply change your virtual path in mainfile.php

Changing the virtual path won't help if the DNS does not resolve to his ISP servers. Am I right?

Some Domain merchants offer domain forwarding, could he use that with XOOPS on his ISP site?

No. he can't also. the domain must point into his hosting. and not forwarded. the DNS must change.

Hey Guys,
After iddling about a little and a couple of installs and removals of xoops, I have finally done it. And without changing my dns server I might add.
Instead of pointing the domain name to my ip i simply forwarded the domain to the url. To avoid XOOPS from misfunctioning however I had to use the original virtual path. I got around this by an option in my dns which allows me to cloack the original url.
So it now permanently displays http://www.mysite.co.uk
I spose the only problem is when people manually refresh the page it goes back to the homepage. This does not happen however when new posts, articles etc are added. So I spose in time people will learn to live with it lol.

All the best Tom.
