Hello,

I have been playing with a little site for a few days, some of you will have seen me here and there in the forums asking questions, well, now I am pretty happy with what I have to play with.

I have decided to pull the site from my quite restrictive ADSL webspace and upload to a new loaction, but I am not sure where to start?!?!?

I have ftp'd everything to a folder on my desktop, and I am currently uploading it to my new location, and appart from some silly mistakes I remember making when I was linking to certain things (which are going to have to changed to point at new location) I have no idea where to go for my SQL database.

I have tried downloading a copy of it using 2 methods;

1: savedb from the module respository
2: using the export feature on my ADSL providers admin page, both appear to have taken a copy of the database, although considerably smaller than their admin page says it should be.

I now have no idea how to get that info into my new database.

I have been through the mainfile.php, and changed the entries for my new dblocation, dbname, dbuser, dbpass.

I just dont know how to get the data I have already into a blank database?

Any advice?

thank you

Dave

Are you changing of host or just the location on the same host ?

This may help
Moving host posts

But from my limited knowledge after restorin my system a couple of times: open your DB in wordpad or similiar - and copy all.
On your host create a DB then go to PHPMYADMIN (if you have it. The DB title should be in the left column, click on it and in the main panel select SQL. In the first box paste your copy of the DB. Hit Go and wait awhile.
No idea if this is the correct way, but it has restored my site a few times.
If you are using a Plesk Server and this doesnt work, give me a yell, I think I have a guide
cheers

I am trying to create db with fasthosts, but I have just been told (not sure if anyone can confirm this) that they do not support phpmyadmin, something to do with them been unable to charge for some of their other services??

has anyone heard of a product called dbtools, I am looking for it at the minute, someone has suggested that may be what I need - can anyone confirm?

Just save your complete db from your actual host.
Import it to your new host. This by php my admin.
After on your new host, upload a new XOOPS and all your modules. Just install with informations of the new host (dbname, dbuser,...) and when the installation script will tried to create db, he will say tables already exist.
After you just need to go on your website.
I think it's everything.

Thanx for your help, I seem to ALMOST have my site up on the new host, however, I now have this odd little error:

whenever I login as admin, and then try to access the admin menu, I get this message:

This is your first time to enter the administration section. Press the button below to proceed.

I click submit, and it keeps returning to that page?

I click cancel and it does nothing ???

What have I done now??

Thanx for the help earlier people!

Oh, got the answer through looking at this

Anyway - it appears that the adminmenu had vanished from my cache folder???

Anyway - thanx for all the help with getting site moved, now I just got to correct all those really dumb newbie "absolute" errors!

Thanx again

Dave
