smiles and rank pics dont show

I just loaded XOOPS for the first time and started messign around with it and I realized when I set up the forums that smilies and rank pics are not showing up.
Is there something I have to do to activate these or did it load wrong?

the files are in the right directory.....but I get a red x for everyone of them.

anyone know?

check your permissions on the uploads directory. The directory itself needs full permissions for the apache user (usually 777), and read access on every file (444 or 666). What happens when you try to access one of the rank images directly (right click on red 'x' box, choose "Copy Shortcut", paste into location bar)?

I get this message when I try to view that file in my browser....

"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /xoops/uploads/rank3dbf8ee8681cd.gif on this server.

Apache/2.0.48 (Fedora) Server at http://www.midwestboost.com Port 80"

How do I grant permission?

changed permissions to that directory and it worked!
