built a fresh database, delete all XOOPS from my server then uploaded 2.2.2
It has the necessary module for user reg.
Glad we figured it out.

Have just come across this problem meself on our site, turning off the firewall does nothing, however when someone signs up, there account does show under the extended profiles and has to be activated manually.

Bit of help on this one, anybody ??

This is unbelieveable.

It actually worked before yesterday and then I got an email via contact form from a visitor trying to register getting that "three characters" error. Then I search, find a fix and apply it and here we are: "Could not register new user." - out of the blue sky and with absolutely no fix or solution in sight.

God I wish I didn't upgrade to 2.2 branch. It's killing me.

So, has there been *anyone* that had this problem and resolved it? If yes, you're most wanted! Please share with us what you did.

I have tried with the register.php file from profile module 2.2.2, but it's the same as with the fixed register.php of 2.2.3 (fixed for that "three characters" bug by phppp).

I am currently using the XOOPS 2.2.2 with the profile module of 2.2.3. I tried with the whole 2.2.2 profile module and it didn't work, and the problem started when I has both XOOPS and profile mod at 2.2.3 so..

You know how bad it is not being able to welcome new users on the site. It breaks my heart, especially when a guy emails me saying "please help!".

Having read through this thread I don't see anywhere where the OS XOOPS is running on is mentioned. But I'll throw in my two cents worth anyhow.

If XOOPS is running on Linux make sure you check your file permissions and verify that the web server has access to read and possibly write to the XOOPS files. Especially if you've just added an upgrade or new module.

I'm using Xoops-2.2.3 running on ArchLinux and haven't had any serious problems. However, I *HAVE* seen XOOPS and other php programs display odd behaviour when they can't read some files because of misconfigured permissions.

Just a thought.

Well, it is GNU/Linux, yes. It is not on a local server, but on one by the hosting provider which, if I am not wrong, runs RedHat.

Permissions are usually automatically left right and unmodified as I upload stuff directly from the tarball to the server using krusader file manager/ftp client. I also checked now and permissions seem to be fine. I somehow don't think it is an issue with that.

I'll give it a more thorough check though, just to be sure, but I think it might be something else.

Thanks for the suggestion though (and cheers for Arch, a great distro! ;)
