This request can be filed under the NON-essential category, but I still thought I'd mention it.

I suggest that future versions of XOOPS should be shipped with a new set of smilies. The ones included now are hideous and gives XOOPS dated look out of the box.

Yes, I know you can change the smilies yourself and I know this is not really important at all. Still...

Becarefull
There is a bug in core, so not all "normal" smilies will work.

hhttp://www.big-boards.com/smileys.php

My own personal preference is the "Smileys collection 1", which is commonly used in forums across the Internet. I'm sure some more design oriented user has some other suggestions though

Anderssk, is that bug still relevant? I saw it was reported for version 2.2.

Any other suggestions?

And how many people would like to change the set of icons?

Wot? No beer?
I prefer different smilies too, but it's not too hard a job to replace the ones we already have oneself.

Smileys are very subjective likes/dislikes. Maybe XOOPS should have it's very own collection like the one in big-boards.com, and the users of XOOPS could in their own websites choose the set they wanted as default.

As for a change in XOOPS website this is a difficult question, as so many users probably would have their own likings, and it would be hard to agree. Maybe a poll like with the theme would be a nice idea.

Culex - I totally agree with you.
The need for smileys depends on the site content.
A company-website don't need the same smileys as a gaming-website.

If I was a hard-core coder, I would add all the smileys sets, and create a selection inside the admin-section.

I think you must make a difference between updating the current set of smilies and extending it by the addition of other smilies/actions/feelings.

For the update it is simple. It replaces simply the images with another (eg lol => Resized Image (XOOPS France)
You need only a directory with all the smileys in it with their standard name eg lol = smil3dbd4dbc14f3f.gif and these can be used to copy them to /uploads/ where they overwrite the existing ones.
All articles and posts on the site are immediatly updated with the new smilies.

For extending the smilie set, you need the image files of the addional smilies to be placed in the uploads directory and to add the data for it in the database. When doing this automatic, you face the following problems:
- Having a unique smiley name for not overwriting existing ones.
- having a unique indentifier tag eg :morelol:
- having the emotion name in the users language

Since setting smilies is mosttimes a one time operation, I don't see much benefit in an automated procedure.
