Not once or twice, but three times!

lake-arrowhead.net -- shop-cities.com -- shoplakearrowhead.com

I paid 7dana back in August to make a custom theme for my site http://www.advenquest.com. I’ve made some modifications since and this guy rips off everything using three different domains.

What should I do? What can I do, short of hiring a lawyer?

There is not much else you can do once they have taken it but you can protect yourself from future thefts. This script that would disable right click and people viewing your source

Put this in your Header section:

How does this protect you against theft?

If the file is downloadable to the client you can never protect yourself fully, since the file must be available for download a client like wget can almost always get the files.

This is a copyrigth issue, if its copyrighted or possibly an artistic issue, as such it is a lawyer you need, or possibly just some pushing on the stealing domains ISP.

Dhurgan he talking about stealing his source code not files he has for download this script will prevent right clicking in the main page and viewing source.

And for people that do that seem not able to find there own original ideas and find them very sad and cheap.

i see obvious differences in those themes tho..

u see 1 point, 7Dana design themes.. yes.. so you paid for a custom theme to be designed? what exactly did the contract state? did it state that once the theme was designed that you had sole rights over it's use/distribution? remember 7Dana does still own the copyright to it if they didn't sign that over to you.

and to be honest, lots of theme designers use similar formats when they design them, so there is nothing really from stopping 7Dana designing a theme and if they come up with something that improves it on the theme they designed for you, does this really mean that they can't use that same idea when they design themes for some1 else?

but at the end of the day? y post here.. if u have a problem shouldn't u be posting on 7dana's forum or contacting them regarding this?

It was a 100% identical copy of my site - complete with my company’s logos in the blocks. I emailed him and he immediately changed to a new theme.

My reference to 7Dana is that I can’t, under the contract I have with 7dana, remove the designed by http://www.7dana.com link, so here was a guy not only ripping me off, but also 7dana.

Personally, I have no issues with webmasters copying an idea and making it better, but I have a huge issue with someone doing a 100% reproduction of my site and the only difference being the header logo and the content.

There are enough free themes for that.

As for protecting against right-klicking, thats a newbie protection, it wont protect against wget which dont rely upon that.

source you get via the right-click is not so usable anyway as its been through the whole XOOPS engine before its delivered to the client anyway, you can probably make an identical theme from it but its more work then its worth.

unless he has a very open webserver, he cant get the actual templates and themes without them being executed by the server, and if they execute, they will run through the smarty engine. Getting the css is easy however if one wants to look at that since the server must release it upon a get, same goes for javascripts.

Not to put a damper in preventing people from stealing your code, but the javascript that was presented is so very easy to get around, in fact, so easy I wouldn't waste the bandwidth it takes to add it to the HTML.
