Please mind the Gap - Xoops 2.0 to 2.2 widening all the time

I've just finished creating a new site (due to be launched next week - YAXS will be notified) using 2.0.13 and an upgrade to 2.0.13.1.

However, I'm worried that the gap between 2.0.13.1 and the new 2.2 series is ever widening. I'm holidng off the upgrade for now to wait for ALL of the modules that I use to have been updated to run under the 2.2. core. Once that's been done, I'll update. But until that happens, I'm sticking with 2.0

But what if this process of module updates takes 6 months by which time we might be at 2.2.9 or whatever? In other words, are there plans to ensure that users will be able to update from the 2.0 series to 2.2 despite the rapid development of 2.2?

Thanks

An uneasy but appreciative Ted

With the new testing processes underway, module coders will have more time to make compatibile versions of their modules... I think 2.0.x will be about for a fair while yet - until 2.2.x is totally matured - and perhaps even longer than that...?

@ tedsmith

I've been trying to get 'Xoops savvy' since November 2004. Aside from security patches, I confess that I will be building sites using XOOPS 2.0.13 for the next 12 months.

This isn't because I don't think 2.2 will be great - it's just that I can't afford to discard my carefully researched modules list, or instruct users (again) how to use the new admin interface. Besides, XOOPS 2.0 works a treat.

I am optimistic the core team will continue to provide legacy support. How module developers treat the change is a different matter. One of the new modules posted this week has a version for both 2.0 and 2.2 which is nice to see. However, I am very sad to discover that SmartFactory have ceased development of their SmartSection module for 2.0 in favour of 2.2.

I can see their dilema, but there must be thousands of XOOPS 2.0 users who will stay put until the teething troubles with 2.2 are ironed out. If I were a module dev, I wouldn't abandon those users too prematurely.
A thread is for life. Not just for Christmas.

I think most developers will support 2.0.x for a while...

2.2 has too many of the features I was looking for that I will not be building sites on 2.0 any longer.

The really best modules have all come out in the last little while and soon there will be all that is needed on 2.2. I have right now, less trouble foregoing what is available in 2.0 than to do without was has been added in 2.2.

This of course is an opinion of building business oriented sites.

Cheers.
