I need something similar, I'm trying to put news on the front page (preferably on main page instead of redirected to the news module).
If I set news module as main module, then there are other blocks that insist on being above the news section.
None of the news blocks shows what I want, either nothing or shows a link with just the title. ie: Top News, Recent News, Big Story.

I have news as the module for start page. And I also have few other blocks in the center of top/main page. But those blocks is always on the top before news, no matter how I set their weight. The blocks on the side works find when I change their order.
