How to go about making a module?

I guess this isn't quite the right place to ask this, but I was hoping someone might be able to point me towards a tutorial for how to get started making a my own module.

Also, if I took an existing module and modified it for my own purpose, would I be obliged to release the changes under the GPL?

Add custom block to newbb

Hi I would really like to make a custom block for newbb that would display just the topic titles of recent, active and most viewed topics in a 3 column table in one block.

Would I be better off trying to add a block to newbb or should I try to modify the existing ones?

Any help would be much appreciated!
