News 1.4 Hack

I would like someone to come up with a hack for news articles that would let you click a button to highlight all the words in an article, then apon clicking on any of the words you would be routed to a dictionary definition of the word.

I have see this at the following site:

http://poetry.tetto.org/define/15961/

the usage clicks a link below the article call "Define Words" and the words become highlighted. Once you click any one word you are automatically routed to Word-Net (Princeton University) online dictionary with the words definition.

This is a cool feature.

How would it be possible to have News 1.4 text lines in articles be numbered?

IE...

If this is the first line of text 1
If this is the second line of text 2

If this is the therd line of text 3

A good example of what I am taking about is here:

The reason I would require this is for proof reading the submitted text. Where is it easier to say you miss spelled "third" in line 3 . These numbers would have to be justified off the the far right, I can't get them to do that in this forum.

Could someone help me figure out how to re-link my XOOPS comments (still in comments SQL) with my upgraded News 1.4 module. After upgrading all my comments on past works were no longer visible. Although these comments are still in the data base and appear to be correctly linked with the commentors and news story ID's they are not showing up in the new module. Any stories added since the upgrade and commented on, these comments are showing no problem.

I would like to offer some advice. Save your money. Get Warpig2's upgrade tutorial and just upgrade to 2.0.13.1. I think there are about 4 upgrades here that are pretty easy. At least this way you won't risk losing so much. I would wait until XOOPS 2.2 and greater have been throughly tested before doing anything unnecessary.

Use your control panel and restore your original SQL XOOPS data base. What I do is back up each individual table in my XOOPS data base as a .cvs file. This way you can restore just the table that you may have deleted

I think you will have to use PHPadmn utility to do it, this is what I use.

Hope that helps....remember back up back up..

Date Format Change

Could anyone tell me how to change the date format in the News 1.4 Top News block.

Currently it is formated like this:

[2005/7/14] and precedes the listed Top News item

I would like it to look like this:

[7/14/05] and follow the listed item

Any ideas????

Some Problems after Upgrade

After upgrading through to 2.0.13 from 2.09 my site has been experiencing some strange problems. If anyone here could help me figure out what is going on I would greatly appreciate it. Although my site is mostly functional this problems are irritating and I would like to fix them all.

Problems Encountered so far:

1. PM messages work for some people but not for others. Inbox sometimes shows with a message but no message will be there. Sometimes a message is there but when deleted the inbox still shows as having a message. I can send PM's to some people but they can't send to me.

2. Sometimes the "Administration" button in the menu disappears and then reappears. When it is not there I can still go to Admin by entering the URL.

3. When I upgraded my News module to Herves new module the comments from all the original articles didn't migrate over. Although the original comments are all still in the comments data base they are not being link with the New module.

These are my three main issues right now. I have not upgraded to the newest News upgrade as I have been reluctant to create any more problems.

News 1.3.11 Problems

I have successfully upgraded my XOOPS with News Module 1.3.11. I have three issues I can't seem to resolve. If anyone can offer any solutions I would appreciate it.

Problem 1: When I upgraded the News (stories data base) failed to link with the existing comments. All my stories lost their comments. I checked the xoops_comments data base and all the comments are still there they just are not linked or showing up.

Problem 2: After the upgrade I would go into my profile where it would list a partial list of stories in the module. At the bottom of the partial list was a link "show all" , this link has some how dissappeared. Even though if I go to "stories by same author" it will list all the story data there, it won't in the user profile. Any thoughts on this?

Problem 3:In the "recent news" block I want to get rid of the date format 2005/08/08 as it takes up to much space in the column, any one know how to do this?

If I can get help with these problems I would greatly appreciate it.
