So...what's your answer?

With sites like BugMeNot.com requesting accounts for people to use, and sites like Mailinator.com giving away junk email address to use for sign up purposes (their message board uses Xoops, I might add), I thought it might be a good idea to put something in my FAQs about why an email address is required. Here are the answers I could come up with:

Quote:
Because, if something major with the site changes, you will need to be notified. I hardly ever send out email though. To date, I think I've only sent 3 mass messages out, one of which was a Happy Holiday's message during Christmas.

Also, when you use the site, you have your own account. If for some reason you forget your password and need it emailed to you, where the hell will it get sent if you don't have a valid email address?

YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WILL NOT BE SOLD OR GIVEN AWAY!

If, however, you screw around and start breaking the "don't do anything illegal" rule, it will be included with your IP address when I send it to the FBI.

Note: Don't try getting around this. Using a service like Mailinator will just insure you get banned.

Just curious as to what others thought of services like this, and what you tell people when they ask.

Top 10 charts would be great. I'm thinking that an overall top 10, 20, 50, or 100 would be great to have, but also per genre. This would help distinquish it out for the artists.

That's just all of what I'd like to see put into it. I don't know about everyone else yet. So far you're the only one to post after it lol.

Timeframe....as soon as possible. =P

Ah ha. I've been throwing around the idea of doing something like that, but never gotten around to actually doing it. Maybe I can come up with some bad movie reviews for you sometime. I'll try to keep them PG-13, as I do tend to try to do with my own sitehttp://www.badmoviereview.com

What kind of articles are you looking for? Given that I do tend to have a bit of time on my hands when I'm not at work, I might be able to help you out every now and then. It just depends on all of the circumstances.

So, while at work today, I typed all this out to get a general idea going of what I myself am initially looking for in this project:

Artist Home Page

Displays:
-Artist Photo
-Artists Name
-Location
-Genre
-Artist Description
-Offsite Link
-Survey Answers
-Artist Rank
-Artist Comments (Guestbook)

Artist Music Page

The Artist Music Page is seperate from the artist homepage. This shows the music links.

Displays:
-Song Title
-Song Discription

More Abilities

Users will be able to rate the artists on a scale of 1-10.

Master Admin Section

-Image File Size & Shape Settings (ex. 300x200 and 35kbs)
-Music File Folder Location Path
-Photo Folder Location Path
-Create Survey Questions
-Turn Survey on/off
-Turn User Rating on/off

Settings by Group
-Music File Size
-Music File Types Accepted
-Music File Limit or Music Folder Size Limit*
-Music Approval Settings
-Hotlinking on/off
-Comments on/off

User Admin Section

Track Properties (all can be changed at any time)
-Downloadable Yes/No
-Description
-Title

-Photo Upload
-Music Upload
-Description Write Up
-Artist Name
-Survey Answers
-Location
-Genre
-Offsite Link

User Can View Personal Stats

Stats will show:
-Total Downloads
-Song Titles with Streaming and Download Count
-Artist Rating

*The option for the admin to choose one or the other is good because it may be different for each site. One admin might want to give the users 10 songs only. Others might want to give them 25 megs of space only.

I really like Monty's idea about adding fields yourself. This is a terrific idea because you will be able to make up survey's for your artists to fill out, like what is done on Soundclick.com. You could do this:

Why this name?
It just seems to fit me.

Do you play live?
Haven't yet. Not sure if I will.

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Well, since I'm not as cool as all the mainstream artists, I guess this is the only way anyone will hear it.

Would you still sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably not. I'm not an image, and that is all that the big labels seem to want to turn you into; just something they can cash in on. I'm me, and that is all I can be. I have no desire to change for them.

Band History:
My history is told in music. If you are really that intrested in my history, you'll listen to the music and to what I'm saying.

Your influences?
Main influence? I'd have to say the one who inspired it all. But she'll never know.

Many different underground artists. The ones who deserve recognition, and don't get it are artists like me. So underground they live on the net. Spheres of the Mind and Oddescee. They are underground emcees on mp3.com and soundclick who don't get the attention they deserve.

Favorite spot?
Anywhere near my center.

Equipment used:
The mic.

Anything else...?
Fact of the matter is that this is me. I will not bend for corporations, fans, angels, or devils. I will not stop for religion, society, or any supernatural myth. I am me, and that is all I can and will ever be.

this is what we been lookin for for a long while, as i'm sure djsckizo has been too.. seeing as we're in a similar business.. lol

I used to run a XOOPS based site for local artists that was basically just an online newspaper for them. I always wanted to be able to give them something like this, but could never find anything to use. Now that I'm actually thinking of relaunching it, it would be great to have this to go along with it.

donation stuff...i always do all of my stuff alone, but let me know what you need and me and Capital One will try to help out as well.

More ideas

Based on something Mentin said in a pm message, it would be good to be able to stop hotlinking, but by group. Like, Group "Artists" would not be able to hotlink, but Group "Premium Artists" would be able to.

Also, bandwith monitor and throttling. Being able to limit the amount of hotlinking bandwith allowed...limiting it to say, 100 megs of hotlink bandwith a month, a week, a day? ...something like that.

STATS! I just thought of this. Letting a user have a stats page that only they could view. This stats page would show the number of downloads, streams, and page views.

Also, it would be good to have the admin section define the file types. MP3 files seem to be the standard for music now, but Ogg Vorbis is smaller and just as good. Others might want to use quicktime files as well. I don't know if this is a viable option or not though, but it's a thought.

I think I might try to write up a huge proposal this weekend for this project. With this type of module, we could definetly get a larger crowd into the XOOPS arena. I'm so giddy over this thing...I'm like a little school girl or something.
