Well I just tried it with the default theme that comes with it. And it looks to me to do just what you want. You just have to reposistion the:

<div id="content">
<{$xoops_contents}>
</div>

I don't have it on a live site but I could post a screenshot if you want? Here's one:

Maybe you could play around with THIS

Don't know which theme your using, but the one I'm using from dana the width is set in the first table of theme.html
