Search for 'captcha', someone has developed one for XOOPS but I think its still a hack.

Take a look at the Anatomy of the Default theme document. This is for the *old* default theme, I think someone has also done some work documenting the new one but its a lot more complicated.

Not clear about your server, if you go with a commercial webhost they will have MySQL/PHP installed for you already. The XOOPS installer will create the database for you.

If you want to set it up locally, Google for WAMP.

The Vietnamese Research Institutes for Aquaculture (No. 1, 2 and 3) all either use XOOPS or are in process in rebuilding their sites with XOOPS (I just ran some training courses for them). Also there is or was a Vietnamese group at the Asian Institute of Technology and possibly the Asian Fisheries Society.

They might be interested in this, especially in things like sharing translations etc etc. I'll send you some contacts later but it will take a while.

Hi Herve

I really don't know who is in charge of xoops.org, or who (if anyone) is working on it at the moment.

[Edit: Does anyone know the answer? Could the community team maybe investigate and publish a list of who-is-managing-what? Perhaps, we will discover there is noone at all!].

xoops.org is an ancient and heavily patched site. Some of modules are also older ones (eg. newbb) and some are customised. So, moving the site to php5 might not be straightforward / need a clean start.

where would I or how do I use this script? This is what I need but not sure how to go about doing it.

If you have cpanel on your hosting account, look for a section called 'cron jobs', you can probably run it from there. I am pretty sure you could run it with xoopscare, but haven't tried yet.

Otherwise, you can achieve the same thing manually by deleting the contents of the relevant tables, as noted above. But please don't mess around with your database until you have made a backup!

Just a follow up to say I *withdraw* my recommendation for Network Solutions, following a recent experience involving billing practices that I can only describe as unethical.

Watch your credit card statements with these guys, and be aware that while it is easy to sign up for a service, it is somewhat less-than-easy to cancel it, even if you didn't order it!

Making any suggestions at all is getting a bit tedious.

I agree. Is there a formal process for making submissions to the Project Council, and having them reviewed? Could we please have one? I feel like the only way to get an idea even looked at on xoops.org is to lay siege to the management!

Re. the database performance issues raised above:

* The size of the xoops.org database can be dramatically reduced by cleaning out the old personal messages and notifications.

* This is how to do it. Takes a few minutes.
