Agreed. It's fine to get with other people who are willing to eat the cost, but I just think that in an open source community "expecting" to get "re-paid" for your contributions isn't right.

People "should" donate because it's the right thing to do and it will benefit them if they do, but they shouldn't be "expected" to donate.

I have my site. I pay for our comms server, gaming server, distro server, web server, etc. I have the donate module, but I don't "expect" to get re-paid for my contribution. I get a sense of satisfaction just knowing that I'm helping someone else.

I'd simply alter the welcome e-mail to say that if they don't login at least once every 6 months that their account will be deleted to make room in the database. I think once every 6 months is not asking too much.

I will have to think about how i could go about this as i want to make a contribution to xoops, but this is costing me a lot of money so it only seems fair if i try and get some of it back.

Again with donations, people will say now that they will donate but when the time comes, u see nothing. I will have to wait and see i supose.

I am one of very few people here who can speak from experience on this cuckston. I had very similar plans with AMS, and I can honestly say that if I had the choice of doing it all again I wouldn't bother and I simply would keep AMS a private module. The grief, personal attacks and hassle simply is not worth it.

Not saying you shouldn't do it, but just be very clear with how you are going to proceed before you do. You might have an advantage in that the module you're looking at contributing is directly tied to making money, and people might be more willing to make donations toward that. I can tell you that with AMS the last time I caculated the downloads Vs donations ratio, it was sitting at about 0.2%. At that rate it takes a LONG time to recoup costs.

Bottom line is that as soon as even one copy of your module is out in the open, there is nothing you can do to stop it, and virtually any chance of you recouping any of your development costs are out the window. This means that you can either rely on peoples generosity (and there are generous people out there, don't get me wrong), or you can stall the release of your module until you've recovered enough money to warrant releasing the module without buring a hole in your pocket. My advice to you is think long and hard before making a decision.

There are two things at hand here that you people have to consider...

If your making a module for the simple reason of sharing it with the community, then that's great, but don't "expect" people to donate or feel that you "should" be "entitled" to get paid to recover your costs. Making modules for an open source community is not a smart "business" move.

So I feel that there are 2 situations that you should release a module to the community.

1. You have the means and don't mind eating the cost for development.

2. You are going to spend the money on development for your own business anyways, why not contribute to the community that has helped you out at the same time.

Of course that's just my 2 cents.

The reply to e-mail isn't really all that effective. It helps, but people can still use a service like mailinator.com to get the confirmation link.

I would like to see something where if a user has not been active for x amount of days, they're account is deleted.

I figured something out. I used the google module, seems to serve it's purpose.

You can see it here.

Hello,

I own BornSlacker.com and we have a gaming team called Team Slacker. I have utilized the "SQuery" function to show the status of our local gaming server, I was hoping for 1 or 2 ideas.

1. Make it so that the information athttp://www.bornslacker.com/SQuery/index.php shows up in a center block on the main page...

or...

2. Someone with some time on their hands could take it a step furthur to port this great tool into a module for xoops.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sup people. I own BornSlacker.com. If any of you guys like southpark the cartoon on comedy central, and have been to irc.tveps.net, then you've probably seen my ad for this site. We help release all the .rm rips for each southpark episode. Anyways, a few of the people from there got together and put this site up. I'm the main designer, but it's very much a group effort. We have funny videos, pics, news articles, a gaming team (Team Slacker..we mainly play Ravenshield and Battlefield 1942) and online radio show that we do sometimes (Slacker Radio), as well as tech news and discussion.

I must comment on your theme too... Most of the people here on XOOPS are not very grafic freindly lol.

That is one of the best themes i've seen for the XOOPS platform. Welcome to the neighborhood and any theme like that is a welcome change from the boring css low grafics stuff being force fed here. No flames please!!!

Hell yea bring on the grafics...

This is what I've been trying to say for years. Why is it that this community will refuse to understand that graphics is where it's at now. The code is great, but what good is it when you don't have a good way to present it. Can an admin please tell me why this cms is so "anti-grahics". And please don't feed me the line of "it uses less resources and blah blah blah" Personally I don't care about dialup users. Never have.
