Glad you solved it... If you have access to the mysqld setup file, you can (temporarily) change the maximum packet size in case you run into this problem again. You would probably need root level access on your server to be able to do this. At least it will save you the time of commenting out some stuff.

You may need to specific 'lookup_func' in addition to 'lookup_file'. (Or omit both for now)

Also, go to your module preferences and make sure you enable all notification events. Since you allowed bookmarking, that option seems to be showing up correctly. (No notification simply means that 'bookmarking' doesn't create notifications, just a link so someone can find a disucssion again later.)

Does you new event show up in the module preferences?

You can *sort of* do this with a wiki module, such as phpwiki or wakkawiki. Neither has a wysiwyg mode. Wakka provides a way for users to 'protect' their own page, but in general every wiki page is editable by everyone else. Probably not what you're looking for, but is one option available to you...

I guess I am thinking of how to acquire *new* advertisers... if they visit your site, like what they see, see some ads, and see a link to purchase ads, then this can operate more smoothly than if they have to email you to set up a banners account for some separate banner management software. However, I suppose for repeat and/or large advertisers, they may not even care what goes on in your site, in which case the separate login is the way to go.

However, please bear in mind I have no clue what I am talking about. I have never purchased or sold banner ads, and I don't think I've ever clicked on one either.

The software I'm sure is quite usable as it is now. If someone does decide to integrate it in to Xoops, I hope they will be willing to share their efforts with the XOOPS community!

I agree that it would be fairly simply to replace the xoops_banner smarty variable with output from another script, and just provide a link in a menu to the 'backend' of the banner ad software where people can purchase ads etc.

However, I can also understand that some people like features fully integrated in Xoops. Often it is just to prevent the need for logging in twice, but also it is to give the whole site a more consistent professional feel, rather than something that is hacked together. This may seem like a relatively small job, but from personal experience it takes a long time to do a good job as you need to have thorough knowledge of the code you are integrating (typically this is the hard part because much PHP software is badly written/organized).

Perhaps an 'advanced' banner management module exists for Xoops... I don't know. I believe the module development team is taking over the banners functionality, so maybe you could ask at the module development site (there is a link icon in right column of this site).

Most modules arise because of a personal need for a particular function, and usually that is incentive enough for someone to write a module. vB3Dev, if you are a coder I would suggest starting this project yourself as it would be a good way to start becoming familiar with the XOOPS core and if you wrote the banner management software you are way ahead of everyone else in understanding how that works. If you are not, and if you need this quickly, I would offer some kind of incentive for someone to do it for you.

My friend had a similar sounding problem with similar hardware but running a linux setup. She replaced everything (cpu, memory, graphics card, etc) one by one, but the thing that fixed it in the end was a new motherboard. If you have some spare hardware around, I would suggest this approach and hopefully the problem is reproducible enough that you can figure out which component is bad.

About the overheating, there is a nice program "motherboard monitor" that I use which gives me CPU temp. Depending on your motherboard this info may or may not be available (I have an ASUS). My graphics card also has a temp sensor. Most chips can tolerate quite a bit of heat without malfunctioning, but if your temps are running hot then maybe a new fan (or water cooling ) is in order...

Good luck!

[Edit: you can probably ignore this as two others posted practically the same thing at the same time ]

Is there a reason you want to edit those files? Normally you shouldn't -- these files are created by the smarty template engine used by XOOPS (templates_c holds the templates that have been "compiled" from smarty syntax to regular PHP files). Files in templates_c may be updated whenever you install/update a module. Edit the smarty templates instead.

(Probably your ISP has permissions set so that only the webserver process (e.g. httpd) can read/write those files, so they are not accessible. From my own experience, unix (linux) should have no problems with those file names.)

vB3Dev,

Your comment about the auto login thread shows me that you don't even bother to read / think about the responses that you are given and anyone who responds to you is probably wasting their time (as I certainly am now). You were given only *TWO* conflicting answers and based upon the vagueness of your question both were reaonsable.

Anyways, you and your psychologist girlfriend seem to be very knowledgable about open source developers. If you *know* that all developers need to have their egos stroked, then you must know that your current attitude is not going to get you very far convincing developers to help you out. Good luck to you in this and other open source communities... you are going to need it.

Per4orm, you raise valid points that I mostly agree with, but I do agree with the moderators' actions.

The XOOPS forum is not meant just as a discussion forum, it is also a knowledge archive. When this archive gets 'polluted' with off-topic discussions, arguments, or even duplicate posting, it becomes less valuable as a resource to our users. People come to xoops.org to solve problems, to get an idea of future changes in xoops, to see what new hacks/modules/themes are out there, to see what other people are doing with xoops, etc etc. Most users do not come here to take part in arguments and debates.

The debates about browsers, for example, have taken place here before (search the forums, including the CSS and templating issues), and have been discussed ad infinitum all over the net. There is no reason for another browser debate here, IMHO. Further discussions of CSS issues are encourage, but should continue in the previous thread(s).

We also have an image at xoops.org that we would like to uphold. Since I have been here, the XOOPS community has been *extremely* friendly, generous and helpful - much more so than any other forum in which I've participated. When new users come to xoops.org and see arguments in many of the top threads, they are going to get the wrong idea and think xoops.org is a hostile place. From nearly 10 months experience here I can say that is definitely NOT the case. I hope I am right in saying that most XOOPS users of all experience levels feel they can post *any* question and get a friendly and helpful answer. We don't want users to feel intimidated and that others in the forum will 'attack' them about it being a 'stupid question' or for some other reason. We'd like to maintain this friendly atmosphere.

Another point is that this resource is meant to be shared by all our users. The developers and other knowledgable and helpful people here have limited time to read and respond to posts. When one single user makes over 100 posts in just 4 days, something is wrong. If these 100+ posts were questions about XOOPS and/or helpful answers to other users' questions, I would have absolutely no problem; but from what I have seen, these posts offer little or no benefit to the XOOPS community. This user is *very* disrespectful and unappreciative of the amount of time and effort that has gone into the *free* product we know as Xoops. Not only does this kind of criticism 'piss off' the developers who have invested all this time, but it gives other users the impression that XOOPS is full of problems, when in fact it is one of the best CMSes out there. (Apparently this user things so too, as he/she is still sticking around after making comments like "I will go find another product which has the basic features".) Don't get me wrong, I am *not* saying we should ban any post that criticizes Xoops!! Criticisms help forum readers to make fair comparisons of CMSes and also help us to learn what people like/dislike about Xoops. We are not trying to 'hide' any of the current shortcomings of Xoops. On the contrary, we'd like all our users to be as informed as possible and the advantages and disadvantages of Xoops. That said, I totally agree with the moderators taking some action after **one** user decides to voice his/her opinion 100+ times in a few days. Enough is enough - the point was already made after 1-2 posts!!!

From past experience with another prolific poster, we (moderators and developers) got a lot of feedback from the community indicating that the majority of people were very upset with that poster. For this reason too, I am happy to see some action taken.

There are several options... several hacks are available and this feature exists in 'commented out' form in the latest distribution of xoops. Search the forums for 'autologin' for the relevant threads.
