I prefer not to get domains registered through web hosting company. It is cleaner to have domain and hosting separate, if possible. It may be cumbersome if you decide to change hosting company in future. Also your doamin should be under full control of you, not your hosting company...

You can go tohttp://registrar.godaddy.com/ (or someone cheaper) and get new domain registered through them. Then request your hosting company that you want to park (or replace) this new domain over your existing domain. Get DNS details from them and set the same in your new domain using registrar’s ‘Domain Control Panel’.

Yes! You are right. You need to register the new name and you may have to pay hosting guy for changing the name and/or parking over existing one.

There is some module named reg-key, doing something similar. Check that if that suits your requirement.

Thanks guys. I figured it out.

The column 'umode' from xoops_users table controls that. And this value is configurable from "User Menu".

The default value when some user is newly created gets controlled by line:200 of register.php
$newuser->setVar('umode',$xoopsConfig['com_mode']);

To get flat view for all user execute SQL
update xoops_users set umode = 'flat'


and for new users getting 'flat' as default value, user "Admin Panel" and Preferences >> Generals - and set flat as comment order. This will be copied to any new user's setting.

I have a problem related to strange behavior of newbb (forums) module. Out of possible three mode 'flat', 'thread' and 'nest' my site is picking them randomly for different users

These are controlled via templates - not theme.

Just to make you it more clear - check modules\newbb\templates you will find these files in database also, which is the one actually used.

You can't change/edit these templates via admin panel without cloning it.

Don't get into that messs - coz I can guess that you are very new to xoops. Study the XOOPS wiki for a while, then these things will become easy for you

If you have access to phpMyAdmin then in xoops_config set debug_mode value to 1.

This is more likely to pin point your problem
