Very helpful thread. Any explanation as to why smarty.now doesn't use the time as indicated in my XOOPS preferences?

I need to add 2 hours, but adding +7200 just causes the page to stop loading when it comes to that point. What am I doing wrong?

I finally got my problem solved too. After uninstalling almost every module, I finally figured out that iMenu was my problem. When I uninstalled it things started working as expected. From what I've managed to glean, iMenu has been superceeded by MultiMenu anyhow, so I'll be going with that. (All this leads me to believe the Module Repository could use some work.)

Two more modules have been added to my list of unistallables: xLink and AMS. At the same time, I've installed other modules with absolutely no problem.

I'd missed the FAQ since I was looking for it in the modules section. I'd recommend putting a link to it there as well. It was the most helpful info I'd found so far on the subject, but no luck so far. I thought it might be conflicting moduels, so I uninstalled any likely suspect, but again to no avail.

I did also double-check group permissions, and all seems to be in order.

I recently installed (and re-installed and re-installed) iMenu and ThemeChanger, but they don't show up on my module admin page. I've never had this problem before. Other modules seem to install fine. Can someone tell me how to get them to work? The readmes aren't in English.

You just need to build the blocks files, the templates, and modify the retrieval of data, so that each block retrieves not all the links, but only those links WHERE category = name, or something like that.

Could someone either point me to documentation that explains how to do this, or explain it here? I've spent a lot of time this week searching for this kind of info, but no luck so far. I'm confident with HTML and CSS, but PHP is totally new to me, so I'm hoping to find something that is clear to non-programmers.

I am upgrading a non-profit's existing site to benefit from XOOPS functionality, so I have to start the structure from scratch anyways.

<whimper>Please, please help... </whimper>

I was at your site just before you posted hoping to find a tutorial on my question. When I didn't find one I started trying to figure out how to ask you to make one. No need to look far, eh? So, maybe in the future... ?

I commented on the FAQ you mentioned above. I already understood what it said, I just don't know how to put it to use. PHP, dadabase queries, Smarty tags... it's all very fuzzy to me. It doesn't put me any closer to doing what I mentioned in my first post.

Thanks for pointing it out though...

Could someone point me to a tutorial (or other documentation, or just answer here) for the custom block creator that would show me how to use PHP with it. I know HTML, and am pretty comfortable with CSS, but PHP is totally new to me. Among the blocks I'd like to be able to create are ones to: display a single forum, display the contents of a single weblinks category, and display the title and a teaser of all the articles in a single category.

Appreciate it...

I just noticed that the area where I can create a custom block mentions a "useful tag": {X_SITEURL}. Are there more tags like this, and if so, where do I find the list. (I've spent quite a bit of time looking through the site with no luck.)

I'm also wondering if there's a tutorial for the custom block that would show me how to use PHP with it. I know HTML, and am pretty comfortable with CSS, but PHP is totally new to me. Among the blocks I'd like to be able to create are ones to: display a single forum, display the contents of a single weblinks category, and display the title and teaser of all the articles in a single category.

Thanks! That was perfect! tzvook has exactly the same thing in mind. Here's hoping...

I just want to add my voice the crowed calling out for this concept. Being new to Xoops, I posted the same question in the noobs forum, only to be pointed here. As I read the thread I kept saying "yes!" to tzvook's posts. Right on!

I've been creating sites since '96, but this is my first intro to cms. I'm blown away to hear how many people don't understand the concept of topic vs. module driven content. It took me a while to figure out XOOPS basics, but once I got ready to post content I started to realize, "Hey, this isn't going to work for my users." For me it boils down to this: either I baby my audience by presenting the content in a way THEY find totally intuitive, or I lose them. SO many sites are set up for what the webmaster finds functional or attractive and not for the user's needs. The old business cliche holds true here: the client (user) is always right.

I've been experimenting with Drupal as well. Perhaps their taxonomy/categories module has something we could learn from? Truth be known, I'm still wading through their presentation of that whole method.

Does 2.1 have a scheduled release date? What time frame are we looking at?
