Well, I joined the NSN site and took a look at your test install, can't really tell how ready for prime time it is yet, may give it a whirl as soon as I have some time to play, it looks pretty good tho'.

GIS - Geographic Information Systems, I'm building a world map of layered GPS info; native American burial mounds, neolithic monuments, etc. see if there's a relationship to anomalous phenomena. I digress...

Is the hosting sales info on your test site for real, or just goofing off? I have some ideas about that if you're interested...PM me or email, if you are.

Take it easy,
DJ.

Thanks for the pointer, you were right about the default template not being editable, fortunately the skin/theme came with a template that I could edit. Works great, I might get anal and figure out how to remove the 'submit' sub link in the main menu, but I've a ton of data entry to do first and get this puppy live.

I may have to revisit nuke, I know it went through an unstable patch, some of the things you mention that make it good also made it weak (if that's the right word). I also played with postnuke for a bit, but the permissions were such a pain in the butt, I gave up on it after a day.

Gotta admit that XOOPS has been the most stable and admin/user friendly I've used so far, I have an e-xoops site thats about a year old too, it has some nice features built in that I wish XOOPS had, namely extra info above and below each module page, but I think I've found some hacks/alternate modules for XOOPS that might give the stock install that ability or adding a special module just for the extra info is easy enough.

Thanks again for your help, saw your site, btw, very nice, thought for a moment that you were a GIS map person, been looking for one of those, but gaming's just as good

DJ

Hiya,

I sorta figured that I'd need to edit the template, but I haven't learned how yet, I know where to find the code for it, I just don't know any of the scripting. I expect I'll do some trial and error, just as long as I keep the original code copied to text pad, I should be ok. Or maybe one of you old hands at this could point me in the right direction.

Ok, how I worked out a fully automated paid subscription site. The trick was never exposing the register page until after I got paid. I had to;
1. create an admin and a non admin moderator profile.
2. do all the necessary stuff (input downloads etc.) under admin profile. log out
3. log in as mod and post news items on each d/l so that buyers could see what's inside.
This way none of the members only links are exposed in the moderator profile and admin profile is never seen by non members.
Next the sales process;
1. customer clicks the buy button and goes to paypal.
2. get redirected to reg page after successful purchase and registers.
3 the paypal address I use has an autoresponder and sends a welcome to, here's the log in address link etc. email.
Fully Automated Paid Subscription SiteTake a look.
It's sorta low tech, but I didn't have the luxury of time or funds to work out an engineered solution.

I doubt it would work this automated on a complex membership site, in that case it would require the 2 levels of membership and a manual upgrade of member status, as was suggested to me in another thread where I asked for ideas, but it seems to be fine for this application.

Let me know what you think,
DJ

Thanks Guys/Gals,

I'd seen most of those, even sourceforge, but I hadn't seen the entire list at sourceforge. As I suspected, there are a lot, not having a more detailed description of each mod does present a couple of probs but luckily I have a non commercial project to install anything that looks remotely interesting and play a bit.

This is what happens when a total noob figures out how to install mods, themes and templates...

In the last 10 days I built 3 sites with XOOPS and even figured out how to make one of them a fully automated paid subscription site. I'd appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to remove certain elements of the download listings (modify and tell a friend in particular) I know there must be a way to do this...

I'd be willing to donate the space to someone willing to create the mod and theme repository, just a thought...
DJ

Ok, I know there were lots of modules at one point, there's 81 (Xoops 2x) here, but a lot are not real useful, and modcentral seems to be all e-xoops now.

I am finding 1 here and 2 there etc. but isn't there at least one repository for all or most?

This seems to apply for themes too...

Hi Jerico and Chado,

Thanks for the pointer, I may have to do it semi automated, but fully automated is the goal (statistically you lose A LOT of buyers if they have to wait) and I've pretty much worked out a way to do it, not bad for a noobie non coder who can't even install a theme pack, eh?

I've set it up so that NO anon links resolve to the log in page. Once the payment is made the buyer is automatically redirected to registration to create a profile and paypal includes buyers email address in the from field. The payment address is on an auto responder which automatically sends a thanks and inludes a link to sections main page and redirects to log in page.
Here's a mock up:http://xoops.able4.com/ without the buy buttons.

So it goes; click buy>>pay at paypal>>new user reg>>link in thank you email. All full automated, so far so good.

Two weaknesses I've found;
1. IF Admin profile is exposed to anon users, profile will expose links to log in page (and register link). This can be avoided and may have a work around.
2. In downloads, users can tell a friend (which most likely won't happen), the email sends a link to the file which redirects to log in page (and register link). I wanted to disable the extras in downloads (modify, tell a friend, etc.) as they are not needed, but I have not found a way to do this in any of the prefs. If I can work this one weakness out, there it is, a fully automated paid membership site, any ideas would be really appreciated, I would hate to start again or HAVE to do it semi automated.

Thanks in advance,
David.

Hi Chado,

I read the thread all the way though, seems to be ALOT of interest in this, surprising that it isn't coded into "system" as a reg option, especially considering how many XOOPS sites I've seen with a PayPal donation block!
I tested an idea last night to disable new registrations and do it that way, but that won't work unless I manually add new users, way too inefficient...
However, what if I could disable (make invisible) the login/reg block and redirect successful payments to the page after they make payment? I.E. this page mysite.com/register.php and create a custom module that has the login block visible to get back in later?
Just and idea, as a simple fix, I'll try it and post back later, maybe someone reading this will understand what I mean and have a better solution.

Hi All,

I'm trying to set up a paid membership site (on a shoestring right now) and I'm trying to figure out a way to do this with xoops, I like it much better than all the others I've played with so far, and all I need it for in this instance is to take a 1 year subscription to a software/ebook downloads club, probably with PayPal.

I just haven't figured out a way to put a payment gateway in between the anon users main page and the create new user page.

Any ideas or examples of relatively simple solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
David.

Sort of my question too, but I wanted to show 5 most recently added articles, and I don't see it as a block in blocks admin either

But 2 days into playing with it, I gotta say, it's pretty good in all other aspects. Sections module is probably it's weakest link...

Thanks in advance,
DJ

OK, just saw NSections module, seems to be most of the fix, pity the included sections module doesn't come with this updated version, hope you include it in the next XoopS version...
