I'm not questioning your decision making process. I'm sure that you are doing what you think is best for your community. We all need to base our decisions based on our current perspective and what we think is the best choice at any given time.

Do you really think that each and every members of the frxoops.com team hasn't made his best to make changes, to contribute or to help with the core development?

Well, I can't answer that for every member. However, I know that many XOOPS members have been contributing suggestions, hands on work, and offers to contribute.

This is a matter of opinion, and you have a right to your opinion. Personally, I'm not concerned regarding the core development team. I trust the XOOPS project as a whole, because there seems to be enough community interest and enthusiasm to ensure that the project continues to evolve. If there are some "organizational" issues that need to be resolved, then I'm sure that those will eventually be taken care of.

My perspective is that the core team is doing the best they can, given the current limitations of time and resources. If you look at some of the huge commercial development companies such as Microsoft, it sometimes takes them several years to put out a new release of a product. There is a lot of planning, development, and trial and error that occurs even before their products get to the beta testing stage. And they have a huge staff of developers!

I'm encouraged that XOOPS is moving forward, especially given the fact that server testing was recently performed and statements have been made by reputable members regarding work being done in other areas.

Also, the current version of XOOPS is way beyond anything else out there (in my opinion). Thus, I have no problem using 2.0.16 until the next version is released. For me, it is well worth the wait.

just a little precision... We (frxoops) are not leaving XOOPS but we open our support to XOOPS Cube which is the only true project alive today.

I don't think that XOOPS Cube is the only project alive. There are indicators that point to significant work being done on XOOPS. Tom's article is a good summary of what is being worked on.

We just need to be patient. There is a lot that needs to be done, but only a small group of people taking on the work. Considering that it is all volunteer work, I'm very grateful regarding their efforts. In the long run, XOOPS is going to be one of the best content management systems available. It is already far beyond other systems in many respects.

Hi phppp,

I didn't realize that I needed to install the tag module to use the tag feature. I've just installed it, and that solved my problem.

However, I'm now experiencing another problem. When I click on a tag/keyword or do a search on a tag/keyword, I get a message that says "invalid query".

By the way, Article 1.0 is a great module! I love the fact that it has both blog and article management type features.

I'm using Article 1.0, but cannot figure out how to use the tag/keyword list feature. I don't see an input box in the article submit form for adding tags/keywords. I've searched the forums for an answer to this, but have not found anything. Maybe I'm just not understanding how to use this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Anyone know where I can download the original XOOPS mylinks module (the last updated version)?

I've looked around, but cannot find it. I prefer the simplicity of the mylinks module to other links modules.

Hi domineaux,

Quote:
It's the increased screen sizes of monitors and the extra content that can be included in sites that are variable width. Users want to fill the screen with the gobble-de-goop and verbiage we supply.

I think there are pros and cons to the Fixed Vs. Variable width theme debate. I agree that some fixed width themes look very strange on the big monitors, since the web pages take up such a small portion of the screen space. This is especially true if the user keeps his/her browser window maximized.

On the other hand, I don't like the way some variable width themes look when maximized. A block of text or article text spread across the entire width of the monitor can look really bad, and is difficult to read. I think it depends on many factors, including the font and font size used, how many blocks are on a page, how many columns are used, and how the blocks of content are distributed. Yes, I agree that variable width is the safer option, but it doesn't always look as good as fixed width.

It really can be frustrating being a web designer. Nothing ever looks the same between different browsers, different browser versions, and different monitors. I was looking at my web site the other day on my friend's notebook, and the color shading was very different from the way it looks on my desktop system. Yes, using only safe web colors can help that, but yet it is very limiting. The other problem is fonts. My friend had her browser font set to large, which caused some of the blocks to break the theme structure. I was already aware that this would happen, but I assumed that most people kept their fonts set on normal. Not a very good assumption on my end. Thus, it can be very frustrating when trying to implement a theme that looks satisfactory within different user environments.

The safest option is to focus on presenting content in a way that is user-friendly and compatible to the widest audience and widest range of settings. Variable width is probably safest in that regard. However, there are also times when the site needs to be very visually stimulating in support of some kind of image/idea being communicated to the web surfer. Fixed width themes sometimes work better in that regard, since it is easier to have more control over the dimensions of the visuals integrated into the design. Although, this is when it becomes very difficult, since it can look terrible on the larger monitors. I'm not sure that there really is an answer to this. Although, as you said, it would be interesting to hear the opinions of different theme developers and XOOPS users.

Hi,

Is there a download link to the original xoopsmembers module? I'm using XOOPS 2.0.16, which no longer includes that module (among others). I tried a similar module, but it doesn't have as much functionality.

By the way, will the xoopsmembers module work ok with 2.0.16?

Hi,

I'm using XOOPS 2.0.16, and wondering which links module I should use, since the latest versions of XOOPS do not come with the original mylinks module. I've seen some references on here to a smartlinks module, but cannot find any download for this. I checked on smartfactory, and from what I can see, smartlinks is an upgrade to WF-Links, but is not yet available. Although, I'm a little confused, since I've viewed posts on here recommending smartlinks as if it is already in existence.

I'm hesitant to use WF-Links, since I've seen lots of posts about bugs. As for the orginal Mylinks module, I can't find the download on here to that. Do I need to download an older version of XOOPS to get the Mylinks module? I've searched around here, but can't seem to find the module by itself.

What is recommended as the most stable and functional links module? Is PDlinks more stable than WF-links?

Thanks for any information,
Dave
