I agree that the [User's groups] addition to the Edit User in 2.0.9+ is great but in my case, I usually have to add several users at once to the same group in which case I prefer the way I found

I like the fact that the system is concerned about the load and switches according to user levels, it shows a great depth of thought into how the system is used.
Right now, with the numbers in the 200 user mark, it was getting a bit of a pain to wade through the left hand list. On the other hand up until now, the two lists was great and involved one less new screen. Perhaps 100 users might be better but no complaints from me.

All I have to do is learn to read and look at the screen - which I am always telling my students to do...

Thanks guys.

AHA!!!

So sorry but this may be of useful to others.

It seems that once a level of 200 active users is hit, the way to add users changes.

Now, it gives a single list of the current users of the group and the link to find members.
Clicking on this link then allows you to find a list of users (example all active users) there you can select who to add to the group.

Sorry if this was obvious...but it wasn' t

System admin
Groups.
When you want to remove or add a user to a group, usually...
choose the group.
At the bottom (below the privileg settings) you are given two lists, all the activated users on the left, those in this group on the right.

Just now, I went to add a new user.

So, first I found the user and activated them.
THen as above went into groups to add them to a particular group.
BUT
now instead of the two lists, I only get one!

EDIT MEMBERS OF THIS GROUP

Find members of this group (this is a link)

the list.

????
I have logged out and relogged in, tried for several other groups with two different browsers.

HELP!

The current count of users just hit 200 active and 40 nonactive, not sure if that is relevant or not.

(Recap. after activating user 200, this occurred...)

I have also tried deleting a few redundant nonactive users to no avail.

hmmmmmmm

Not sure if that is the right question, thought it would get the attention of the knowledgable though

Very simply.
Module Newbb, there is a block that shows the recent posts.
I would like to alter the information this presents.

In such a case I usually look in two places.
1.the preferences for the module (often a setting there helps)
2. the templates.

In this case, specifically, I would like each entry to take up only one line, not three. Looking at the generated htmlIn the last column on the right it shows time, icon, poster name all seperated by <br />
It is this <br /> that I would like to be able to edit. Get rid of the poster name and icon altogether.

The preference settings didn't seem to help (although the if clauses in the template code imply some settings-dependencies)
So, I looked at the templates.

I looked at newbb_block.html and it seems to me that if I can get 'inside' the {$topic.xxx} parts of this code

<{$topic.title}></a><{$topic.topic_page_jump}></td>
<td align="center"><{$topic.replies}></td>
<td align="center"><{$topic.views}></td>
<td align="right"><{$topic.time}></td>
</tr>
<{/foreach}>

I might be able to work it out.

So...errr, where is a good place to start??

Thanks.

I agree with Dave_L
Quote:

But it may be expedient to pick one area, such as modules, or even a single module, to get started.

I prefer to choose one single module at first, use it as the guinea pig.

One module to define things would be my choice.

Can we use a dichotomous poll? Just two questions only one or the other is the right answer, see how many people are in the QA team (Dave_L would know that I guess..) Put a poll up and once we get say 70% on either answer, move on??
Just an idea, I am not used to working in an e-team where we can't meet up physically so I thought it might be good to have a clear way to define our decision points.
Of course that may be Dave's job, I am not sure

Need to see if I am on the right page at all here, I thought it might be useful to consider what criterion we would be looking at as we write these tests, something like this???

Please, please tell me if I am off-base, need to know now rather than later

Test - I INSTALLATION
Tester should consider

- if a zip package, when expanded, it expands 'clean' i.e. into the required folder not 'modules'>'moduleName' etc etc requiring the user to move the folders after expansion.

And the test itself would be...(kind of a la Mozilla)
# || test || what to do || what to check for

I.1 || prepare || vanilla XOOPS || no other modules
I.2 || Upload || upload zip || uploads OK
I.3 || expand || expand || expands 'clean'

Test - S SETUP
Tester should consider

- how much non-browser work is required (folder permissions, editing of php files or your specific information compared to being able to use modules>admin within XOOPS later)
- that the meaning of the terms is clear
- spelling/terminology is correct for that language

And the test itself would be...
# || test || what to do || what to check for

S.1 || prefs || go to XOOPS admin || prefs can be set here
S.2 || prefs || in XOOPS admin || meaning of prefs clear

This would have to be a loop I guess, we would need to set each preference, make sure it had the desired effect...looping through each setting then, would be part of the smoketest?

Like I say, let me know if I am on the wrong planet,
cheers

Woah - you guys are making me feel realllly ignorant but I am in and not easy to get rid of
Thanks for putting me in the team, let's have a look at all this from a relative newbie perspective if you don't mind.

Writing the smoketests.
I really like the idea of using a well-known, simple module that we are all relatively happy with as a base from which we can write the smoketests.
Applying the test as we go to a single module would allow us all at whatever level of experise we have to reduce the chances for confusion.

So a few questions,
Do we agree that this is a good idea? If so, can we put together a candidate list for such a module?
If not, let's see why not and move on from there?
Remember I am just talking about writing the smoketests not applying them in full yet...

I also am very much in favour of keeping things lean at first so please let us stick with modules.

I second the minimising/standardising of the language / terminology we use, I work in English and Japanese every day and this is not something to be underestimated!!

Thank you.
That helps...

So, can I put that down as a reasonable sequence of bughunting.?
If you get this message.
Try to contact via phpMyAdmin or other admin interface.
If that too does not work, then it is the server directly and not related to Xoops.

Is that correct?

Does anyone know what kind of things could be causing a server to have outages (for want of a better word?)
It seems very odd to be coming and going i.e. can connect, cannot connect etc.

Thanks again,
it alll helps..
Stu

HELP!
I too, just got this error message on my server.
The system has been up and running for a few months now, working well.

Last night it was working well,
this morning...the error appeared.

I went into the phpMyAdmin but there too I got this...

#2013 - Lost connection to MySQL server during query

UPDATE! I was able to log in to the main index page for a while but now back to no connection....

During this time I also logged in to phpMyAdmin and managed I think to dump the database

I am not a panicky person but this is very disconcerting. Any and all light that you might be able to shed would be welcomed.
If there is any testing that I could do which may help then please just ask.

From the thread so far, it seems that the load can perhaps cause database connection problems but for the time-being, I just don't see how it could change overnight.

Is it possible that a user uploaded a file that has suddenly put too much stress on the server?

Do I have too many modules (I have around 15 or so)
Do I have too much data?? Should I be considering these factors or not?

Any help at all.
Thanks very much.
