Thanks for that clarification James
I did see that comment from Snow, although it seems a bit obscure for the general user to understand.

Thanks for taking this in the spirit given

Let's move on

I have to be 100% honest here, and I apologize if this offends anyone. I’ve seen the proposed new theme and it’s a nice theme that would be well suited for many professional applications. However, it hardly screams to me “cutting edge CMS”. Quite frankly, it’s not even all that original. Also, since it’s based on a theme that came out over 2 years ago, it’s already dated and tons of sites already have a simpler variation of it installed. Again, no offense intended, but I don’t feel the proposed new theme is the very best that XOOPS can do.

James, Im sorry, but what theme are you talking about? Is it publically available for us to see? If not it's somewhat violating to discuss this here, as n0-one else can comment.

Ive seen some screen shots of themes by designers in this thread. Is it one of these.

Please be specific, this is a public discussion and I dont think you should divulge privileged information where others cant comment.

To connect to a database you need to specify the username and password plus the database name.

Providing the physical URL and virtual address of the site is correct all should work ok

1- the address looks ok, because you get a message saying 'the page your accessing is outside of the XOOPS physical path' Or something like that.

Next access phpmyadmin and check your database is there with the correct name.

Has the host changed your admin login password or username? if so this needs to be updated MANUALLY in the mainfile.php

check these lines 70-84 and change 'example' if required:

Quote:

// Database Hostname
// Hostname of the database server. If you are unsure, 'localhost' works in most cases.
define('XOOPS_DB_HOST', 'example');

// Database Username
// Your database user account on the host
define('XOOPS_DB_USER', 'example');

// Database Password
// Password for your database user account
define('XOOPS_DB_PASS', 'example');

// Database Name
// The name of database on the host. The installer will attempt to create the database if not exist
define('XOOPS_DB_NAME', 'example');

If you see a red cross, you're probably using Internet explorer. This red cross is useful, because you can hover over it, right click and select 'properties' from the menu.

In the popup box, you will see a http address. Check this address carefully. Is this where you expect your image to be, or is the address wrong? The address is where the web page has been told to find the image, if it's not there, you get a red cross in the browser.

REMEDY:
1- the image is in the wrong place
2- The webpage is looking in the wrong place.

You have to make sure the address is where the image is uploaded to. Check your submit page again (edit) or check your image files to make sure they are in the right place.

The designs so far look very promising, but I would really like to see them on a stripped down mirror of xoops.org As for the theme features and layouts; again, many of them look good on paper, but we need to test them to see how they translate in real usage. How useful are 'hideable side panels'? Ive had them on my site for years and never used them. Maybe others do?

Menu systems are usually a major area for lots of differing opinions. We can get completely locked up in trivial details which prevent us moving forwards.

We need a test site so that these concepts can be trialled by a variety of users like my 87 year old grandmother and my 5 year old daughter as well as seasoned XOOPS users.

The filtering process must come from real life usage, not just theoretical constructs.

Ultimately we should have a theme selector here on the main site where users can choose and test and make their decision on a poll.

There are people in open source projects who are too interested in their own agendas for recognition and wont let go of the reigns of power. Some are infatuated with 'process' rather than 'direction' and hooked up on 'details' and not 'destination' Not only is this a poor use of energy and resources, but it stifles the new life of change and evolution.

Some of these people have infiltrated into the management teams and there are also those in management who have grown old, cynical and apathetic. 'We've heard it all before and nothing ever happens' they say. Well that's because you buggers have your foot on the pipe and cant see a way forward.

Looking into their meetings, between the power mongers and cynics we see pages of babble about petty details, irrelevant distractions and unfocused arguments.

Is it any surprise such projects cant move forwards? "Life is what happens to them while they're busy making other plans."

Im watching it right now... Very revealing, her's an abstact

Every open source project runs into people who are selfish, uncooperative, and ... all » disrespectful. These people can silently poison the atmosphere of a happy developer community. Come learn how to identify these people and peacefully de-fuse them before they derail your project. Told through a series of (often amusing) real-life anecdotes and experiences.
