That is correct. It is supposed to make an image inside a link, when you click on the image, you go to the article (or topic). The image is defined in the blocks edit with an URL inside bbcode img tags.
What html is generated on your page for this image?

When viewing the thread, below the last post on the right is a link Admin. When you click on it the page refreshes and more links are shown for pending, deleted and view.

The ?> should be the last characters of your mainfile.php and may NOT be followed by a linefeed, space, ...
Perhaps disable Protector in mainfile.php by putting // in front of the pre- and postcheck lines. Delete also /xoops_lib/modules/protector/configs/badipsxxxx (variable name)
Check also your preferences for the bad ip field. If there is something in, clear it.

It is unlikely that freelove has used the same configuration.

The file is created, when you do actually edit a first post or using the standard dhtml editor in any module.

For the freegames, this is not much a module, it acts as an iframe to the authors' site, where the flash games no longer seems active. Try FlashGames
