Thanks for your comments, but that won't solve the problem I think? Basically I need 5 links that will *always* jump to the most recent posting in each of the sections for a team in the school.

So regardless of whether one team has 5 postings and another team has 3, each link will always point to the most recent article *in that topic section*.

Quote:
Another way to go is create custom blocks with the hyperlinks showing the names of the teams--and direct links to the articles, the paths of course can be found in the browser address bar. To change the hyperlink for new articles is quite simple, you just change the article i.d part i.e.

Right...but every time a team places a new posting in their section, the link to the article become obsolete doesn't it, as it is no longer pointing to the most recent article?

Quote:
There is also a block called "WF-Section Article Links" which you can activate. In each article you wish to appear in this block, put a tick in "no show article" box which is near the bottom when you edit the article

Not edit the article...post new ones....this block would not keep a fine balance....I need it to pick one (the most recent) post from each topic/team area....not just the most recent postings from WFSections.

Wfsection - each section link jump to most recent post?

Hi all,

http://www.pnins.school.nz/

This Schools web site uses Wfsections in the "Teams" area of the left-hand menu. At the moment, clicking on the names of any of the teams (the teams names are in Maori for anyone wondering) jumps to a list of the articles for that section....I want it to jump to the most recent posting in that section, particluarly because at the moment, there is only one posting per team.

I've searched the forums but haven't been able to find a solution. I want the link to always jump to the most recent posting for each section...how do I do it?

Cheers,

Phil

Thanks, I hadn't thought of using Spotlight...which the developer hacked for me a while back so that it displays from a specific category, so that might be the way to go.

With regards modules vs sections, I get what you are saying, but what I find hard to do is then relate that to building a site structure. When you are developing your site, you get the opportunity to display blocks...and when you set these up, you get to say where you want these displayed...more often than not, where to display them can include *in* a module....for example, display this block in WfSections.

So although modules have functions, they are also often an "area" that you can go to on your site...the downloads area, news area (I'm trying to avoid the term section here)....so how is that different to a section?

Is a section basically the part of a module with no functionality? Why would you actually choose a section over a module?

And....then I guess, where does that bring in topic blocks?

I'm finding XOOPS really easy to develop with and customise, but I have to admit in terms of layoing out my site, I'm getting a tad confused.

News, sections, blocks - I'm getting confused

Hi all,

I'm really starting to go round in circles a bit, as I start to get news, blocks and sections all messed up. I have a test site up and running (http://www.nzmac.com/xoops/) which is basically just this site (http://www.nzmac.com/) redesigned, but with only minor content to test at the moment...with FreeContent being used for a lot of the links that I have up the top. Once I get the design all sorted, I intend to use FreeContent as a quick way to take my existing content into Xoops...then mould it more as I have time.

Anyway...a few of questions.

Site news
--------
The site news block I really want to be a combination of two things.....comments (things like "I've fixed the forum problem") and direct links to articles or reviews or other content, that will originally sit within FreeContent.

I want something that isn't an HTML block to do this....do I use news? I *don't* want people to have to go into the news area though...I want them to be able to go straight to the articles from the main news module if possible (see the exiting site if you want to see what I mean)

Infrequent news
-------------
While there is site news, there is also news on the magazine that sponsors my site...but this mag only comes out every 2 months. Unlike the site news, I want a lot of wording to be displayed. How can I have the news title and lots of text associated with it showing, when I only want news snippets for the other?

Sections
-------
I'm just totally lost as to what they are compared to modules, in terms of where they sit....I thought they were a bit like sub-directories a bit like modules are, but now I'm stumped.

RSS feeds
--------
And finally, I want to be able to offer the site news links as a RSS feed..is this going to be possible?

--

Thanks in advance...I know I've probably totally confused everyone, but any advice is welcome.

Making "Home" link appear off main page

Hi all,

In the new design I'm working on, most of my main links run along the banner/header area of the site. Problem is, once you are away from the main page, there's no obvious way to get back to it.

I could just put in a "Home" link and leave it there, even on the main page, but I think that's poor design (yes, I know, fussy)....but I was wondering if there is any way to script something that says....

if....the current URL is not *exactly* the same as the site URL
show the "home" link
end if

I'm not a coder...just a hacker of others code, so I'm stuck on the first part....asking XOOPS to figure out what the current URL is?

If there is a better way, or if my idea is not a good one, please let me know.

Cheers,

Phil

Sunsnapper...thanks for the comments, but as I mentioned, I'd already figured that out...my last remaining question is about Urchin.

WarDick....Yes, Yes!, yes.....and, no, they may not care, but I like clean code.

Any comments on Urchin anyone?

Item 2 Item 2
Item 3 Item 3
Item 4 Item 4
Item 5 tem 5

Any ideas?

OK...have found that in fact it is possible to have XOOPS validated...you just need to do some tidying of code and even hack some modules slightly. I've also seen other postings here regarding Google and all seems OK there.

Anyone got any comment on Urchin? Assuming that Google can scan pages for their search engine, it's sounding as though Urchin should be able to produce normal stats on a site running Xoops.

I just really need to make sure I'm going to be able to continue to produce the stats I have been for the static site.

Phil
