Re: Advanced Downloads Module

I've been playing with the Downloads Pro. Still having issues with it.

Is anyone using it successfully?

Rusted metal type theme...EADJ theme from Xoops 1.+ versions

I've been waiting for someone to put up a theme like the EADJ versions for earlier Xoops.

Currently, I'm building a historical World War I & II site and I'm looking for a theme with the look and feel of armour plating. Like Dark grey with rust streaking, not sure if the text needs to be white or very light grey.

The site needs to be easy on the eyes, but not so dark it seems like a heavy metal gamer site.

Anyone working on one or knows where one is...I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Not sure why tried to remove login block ? but maybe if you went to user.php you would have got back in

I didn't want a login block on the XOOPS left side and one on the forums that was showing, that is, before I changed the header wrapped thingy in the XOOPS BB Module in the IPB admin CP.

I did try admin.php and user.php and couldn't get back in. I didn't reinstall the module (update it).

I haven't worked with the mod today. I intend to try to nail it down this evening and I'll be much more careful with the logic issues.

I did read the docs carefully and I made changes withing the XOOPS BB Module - Common settings inside the Admin CP of IPB. The install is very simple, the one inside the IPBM zip package.

I'm going to try very hard. My user name and email address on these boards is a SPAM magnet. I get 20+ Spam per hour off the XOOPS boards it seems.

I'm going to do all I can to use the registration/login from the IPB, if at all possible. I have a hotmail address for the login in I use here, and wow the spam bots appear to really have the back door on this site.

I think you can sure get some beta testers off these boards.

There are more than a few of us needing a good downloads module, like now.

I tried the Koudanshi IPB mod yesterday. I was trying to use the registration/login from IPB.

I ran into a myriad of problems. When I loaded the site I had the user login from Xoops. WHen I removed the XOOPS user login/block I couldn't get back into the XOOPS site to administer it. I even tried going directly mydomain/xoops/admin.php and got a message I was not authorized. Somehow the login information was an issue. I finally requested my password through email. I didn't get the password, but a link back to the site. I kept messing with it and finally got a new password assigned from the IPB or the Xoops, not sure which one. LOL

I noticed on Koudanshi's site he is using the XOOPS registration. I prefer to use the IPB registration, because it keeps out the Spam bots much better. THe graphic character entry thing really helps.

Regardless, I have backed off the Mod and gone back to a hyperlink through the Multi Menu to a standalone install of the IPB.

I hate having two logins. When I'm having issues with the registrations and logins, and I'm the site builder...I've found my users will not even take the time to send an email complaint.

I think I will try it again. I have found things that get messed up are sometimes my own fault. LOL

Occassionally, that's not the case.

I put up the phpscript,"PAfilesdb" script and just hyperlinked to it from the multi-menu. The multi-menu is an excellent mod for linking to non-xoops scripts.

Pafilesdb is a pretty good files manager and uploader/downloader. It is nowhere near equal to the download module we need. It is fine as a download module, if anonymous downloading is OK. Permissions are not very flexible in the script.

This may sound bad, which I don't mean it to be. I just go fishing for phpscripts, when XOOPS doesn't have what I need. I then just iframe or hyperlink to other scripts. I have a hosting account with no restrictions on MySql databases...that helps a lot in putting up the separate scripts.

After almost 2 years with xoops, I'm no longer an XOOPS purist. If I'm on a tight schedule, I just improvise.

I am also anxiously awaiting a good XOOPS downloads module.

I've installed the Mydownload Pro.

When I try to upload jpg, jpeg it says MIME to not allowed or something like that. Actually, there is no jpg, jpeg selector in the preferences.

I looked a the MIME file in the module and it appears everything in place, but not all are showing up in the MIME selector under preferences.

Also, it would be nice to have a click on beside the upload browse entry. THe purpose would be to place the uploaded file automatically into a pre-determined folder. It would save having to type in the file location, and would tend to encourage all uploads in one place over time.

On the admin preferences there are still some box entries in Portugese or Spainish.

It would also be nice have some placement tool for placing the graphic upload file in the download box, instead of far right.

In my own case I put up a separate intall of IPB in my root. This way when IPB brings out another upgrade I'm not tied to a 3rd party (bbpixel.com) to work through compatibility issues. This way I have a separate MySql db. IPB is coming with the ver 2.0 very soon and everything for 1.3 is going to be out the window.

All you do is link to the IPB board you create and create a home link (back to Xoops) on the header of the IBP board. It works very smooth. Another feature I like about a standalone install of each is the IPB boards take the whole screen and makes viewing the forums less tedious for users. (no menu bar on the left side)

Also, you can acquire an IPB skin look for XOOPS on this site, if you'e using the IPB default skin. A separate install will look pretty seamless that way.

Koudanshi has done a good work, and I sure don't want you to think I don't respect that. I'm just making an alternative suggestion.
