The latest version of news has an awsome permission system. It allows you to set up Topics, and then put group restriction on the topics about who can post/submit/read...

I just put in in last night and its great.
Get it Here.

For news to appear ont eh front page, check out the FAQ section, I think there are quite a few posts about it.

Check your System Preferences, and you can select the module that will show on teh front page. If you make it news, than articles will appear. (Classic view?)

Look in the preferences for the modules. You can set it up there. Also, after you make the change, it will only take effect for users that register after the change. Everyone else will retain thier default settings, however you can go into thier profile and make the change manually, or make the change directly in the databaes if you have a lot of users.

To prevent users from being able to change thier view style, set the View Mode of the Threads to "None". You can also find this in the forum preferences. You'll need to be runnign at least newbb2.x in order to turn the view mode off.

- edit -
Oh, I don't think the latest version of newbb has been posted in the module repository yet, so you'll need to get it form the Dev Forge.

Look in your Sys Admin | Preferences. You can set it up so that a certain group has to approve registrations.

Each module or block also has the ability to be hidden or shown for each group of users.

Start out your journey with the Xoops FAQs, most of the questions new users have are answered there. If you spend a few minutes going though them all, you'll save countless hours and fustration later on.

And welcome aboard!

Can you click the link for lost password?

if that stil does not work, try to reinstall xoops, just use the same database and you shoudln't loose anything.

i think there may have been a security issue with News 1.2, so you might want to check out 2.0. ( i think)

For your question, go into the news preferences, you should be able to setup what you need there.

if your worreid abotu space, just run your test server locally. If you want to "mimic" the overhead of a site with tons of content already, than one idea would be to export that database to your testing site.
