Hehehe!

This ought to be an interesting thread to watch.

Thanks for the great post Tom!

I don't have much to add to this thread except that XOOPS needs a complete overhaul in the SEO department. The only way I was ever able to do well in search engines with XOOPS was to do a lot of custom coding in the theme and some core hacks to add nofollow.

I hope developers will sit up and take notice of threads like this because poor SEO is one of the big components in why XOOPS is getting smoked by less capable systems like Wordpress.

Thanks JM for that information.

Is there a package which just give me the "base" itself and I will do the rest? e.g. hack that will let me do all the translations by myself, it will just split/duplicate my website in a way that I will be able to put all the translations there?

Thanks in advance again!

Not that I am aware of.

If you are using XAMPP, the configuration should be correct right out of the box.

Make sure the file has the right extension, like phpinfo.php, make sure you have the file in the correct location (XAMPP's web root), and make sure the URL you are accessing in your browser is correct, likehttp://localhost/phpinfo.php.

There is the XOOPS Multilanguages package from SmartFactory that works pretty good, but again, it doesn't provide 100% translation.

Something important to note, XOOPS Multilanguages 2.0.7 is a severely hacked version of XOOPS 2.0.16. Therefore, if you want the patches that are available in 2.0.17.x, you will either need to manually implement them yourself, or you will need to wait for the SmartFactory team to update XOOPS Multilanguages to use the 2.0.17 core.

My question is how to implement the translation into the website, does XOOPS provide you with a kind of feature such as duplicating your website?

My question isn't how to translate however

Thanks

If you are meaning to show the translated text directly on your site, yes, but it's not 100%. Search for multi-language hack on this site.

If you are meaning to completely duplicate your site, yes, but that is very bad for search engine rankings, even if in a different language. Search for multi-site hack on this site.

Hope I understood you better.

There are a few multi-language hacks available for XOOPS, but I've found most, if not all, of these hacks do not translate all of your content.

The easiest way I've found to translate your entire site is to make use of Google's translation services. If you look athttp://xoopsinfo.com (top left corner under logo), you can see a quick and easy theme hack that works quite well. Just view the source of the page to see how the code works.

What he said. Themes don't need to be so complex. No offense intended. I just think it's too complex to be a good "general" template to base themes from.

EDIT: Yes, look out the window for pigs flying and call and make sure h3ll froze over. I just agreed with Damaster publicly.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xoops/ has some modules available for download. You can also try searching this site for the module you are looking for and see if the author has provided an alternate download location.

From what I understand, XOOPS Addons will be done soon, which will be a community operated repository.

As far as the dev.x.o site goes, last I hear they are moving to the new servers, but there have been some delays.

Considering that the first GPL Lawsuit was filed September 20th of this year, there really isn't a legal precedent set in the law books, afaik. Most disputes have been handled directly by the Free Software Foundation.

To be entirely honest here, I don't see where the debate is. According to the quote

Quote:
As a special exception to GPL, any HTML file which merely makes function calls to this code, and for that purpose includes it by reference shall be deemed a separate work for copyright law purposes.

it seems to me to be pretty cut and dry.

SMARTY variables are function calls. They reference predefined functions in the XOOPS Core. If you only remove the SMARTY variables, a large portion of themes would still operate perfectly. You can still drop content down inside the HTML elements and it will render in a browser.

Ironically, I was about to post that themes are NOT dependent on XOOPS to function (most anyways). If you take out the SMARTY variables and repoint your image directory and css references, most XOOPS themes function flawlessly.

I cannot speak for any other designer, but the vast majority of themes I did for XOOPS were coded as standard HTML templates, then had the XOOPS variables dropped in during the final steps.

Regardless, images are automatically copyright and that, in itself is enough for a copyright suit UNLESS you packaged the GPL (or compatible) license with your themes.

Still, finding thehttp://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html link puts it in black and white, from the authority, for all to see.

Quite interesting indeed.

Anyone want to take bets on how long it will be before XOOPS gets a huge influx of premium themes?

Very good thread.
