I realize you probably want to do alot more work, but you really should check out ning.com - You can make a social networking site on there easily!

Depends how much effort you want to stick into making it on there also, yet remember they get paid for Google adverts on every page.....
That is a very cool system...bit slow with all the ajax, yet cool.....Oneness
Will change that when get the time to edit it all.....lot of effort needed though....

You could; there are also Ecommerce modules in the repository…check the authors sites if there are links provided, as they may have a newer more secure update….

The site overall layout is the theme to begin with, and then the modules contain templates and often CSS files also, which can be both adapted to suit your needs....

To me it does look blocky lingerie normally does.....if you could make a more curved theme to begin with, then it would probably sell more then that does......you can add photos to most modules and then some form of sales cart....the rest is in the theme design...

Yes should be easy enough, and run faster then that does...it's just a case of looking for the modules that suit the requirement you need.....

You could also try installing the modules, so the database is established and then removing the head information and just inserting the data alone into it.....

Another idea was think about, is could we add Tidy to it also, so we have a full W3C checking system?
Save me needing it in my browser and meaning when we say W3C we know for sure every XOOPS site is....
