Thanks, everyone. It appears that the hosting company figured out that it WAS their problem and fixed it. Thanks again!

Yes, I can access the database by using phpadmin. No, I didn't change the username and password. In fact, the site was working just fine yesterday.

I've had a XOOPS website athttp://www.christianwahm.com for quite some time. Recently, I've changed hosts. After spending a minimal amount of time getting the kinks out after the move, things have been plugging along.

Last night, I went to the site, and I'm getting a XOOPS error message:

Error [Xoops]: Unable to connect to database in file /home/cwahm/public_html/class/database/databasefactory.php line 34

I have not done any recent updates to the site - when I do, I make sure they work! However, I found out that my hosting company had a MySQL problem last night.

So, I believe the issue is because of their problems last night. Would this error indicate to you that maybe they changed the path or the database is still offline? I'm not sure where to go with this one.

I can access the MySQL database. Should I reinstall XOOPS over what I have and run and update? Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!!

YAY! I found what I was looking for. This document is like a "users guide" to a XOOPS website. Madfish wrote it. It's great! Here's a link to the thread.

And here's a direct link to his "users guide". I think I'm going to be posting much of this in a SmartFAQ module.

Thanks - but actually, no. The gentleman in question had a PDF file, I believe, linked from his website that was for his website users, that did a good job of explaning how to use the forums, etc. He said that people could take it and modify it for their own site.

I'll keep looking - and if I find it again, I'll post the link here. Thanks!

In the past six months, someone posted a link to a document or write-up they had posted on their website that would help new users figure out how to use a XOOPS website. I thought I bookmarked his site, but can't seem to find it.

Does anyone remember that post and did you keep a link to it? I've search the forums, but can't seem to figure out what to search for! LOL

Thanks for any assistance you can give!

I am using NewBB version 2 (2.0) RC3 - the latest stable release. I wanted to set up a private forum that only certain users could use.

1. First, I set up a forum category and then a forum topic.

2. I assigned it to the users "webmasters" and a new category of user just for that forum.

3. I added myself and one other person to that new user category for the moment. This other person will be a moderator. Before I did this step - I could see the private forum list. Now I can't.

I also don't see any way to post to the special forum I set up. There's no "new topic" button available.

What am I missing here? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the assistance!

I did this earlier this year. I had a yahoo groups with about 275 members. Some of them came, some of them didn't. The ones that didn't I was not concerned about. They were on my list to advertise their business on our once a week day for advertising.

It is going to be harder if you don't own that list. All you can do is continue to email them a bi-weekly reminder about all that is going on at the site. Keep them updated about new things, etc.

Last week, I went through a list of 400 people and deleted everyone that hadn't logged in for six months. I notified the entire membership that this was going to happen about a month in advance. I want an active site!

So I ended up with about 275 members, which is already growing again. It can be done, but it takes patience!!

I'm running a contest right now that the person with the most posts by next weekend becomes our featured person on the site for December. Seems like it's working. The posts are picking up.

Also, make sure that you post on a regular basis. With the latest newbb release, you can view all posts that are unread. I use this feature ALL the time!

Hope this helps! May you have success with this!

Thank you! The vertical alignment was just the thing. Some said top - some said middle.

Thank you again for your help!
