About Xoops: I don't agree that XOOPS misses modules, it misses integrators with the ability to transform the existing modules into practical applications. That's why I suggested this label.
An "Authorised XOOPS Integrator" label could help to build a more professional image. This label could be used by approved site builders and web design companies using Xoops. I can imagine that some users don't have the time to search the forum and are willing to pay for help.
Publishing a list of the Authorised XOOPS Integrators will also motivate design companies to leave the XOOPS link in the footer.
The corporate look is also an issue. Have a look at the local support sites... they should look alike. The only difference should be the language.
There is a difference between themes and templates. You want to change the theme of your site to blueish, well, you'll have to upload the unzipped folder to /themes and change the settings... there are already a lot of postings on this topic, try a search on this site.
Go to blocks, look for the recent news block and click on edit or change (don't remember in English, but it's "wijzig" in Dutch). Change "lengte van de titel".
