I haven't actually asked them to do that yet, however I have asked them to install a few other things and they have always done it straight away with no problems (I am renting a managed VPS from them).

You get a fair bit of control of what versions of things you run, and also whether you want to run latest releases, stable versions, or even older (conservative) versions. I think I can even upgrade to version 5 my self (need to check to be sure), but as I am not sure of the implications for the modules I run, I have resisted temptation thus far.

Did you find any problem / thing that needed to be adjusted in standard XOOPS install or common modules? Just curious. I have the option to upgrade my VPS to PHP 5 but for the moment I am treating it like a bomb that might go off :)

* Add a salt to password hashes, to prevent dictionary attacks being run against captured hashes.

* Hash passwords simultaneously against 2 hash algorithms, to drastically reduce the chance of finding hash collisions.

* Use different hash algorithm (Herve solution :)

* The default password length in XOOPS is too short. Should be longer (this is a trivial change).

* BUNDLE PROTECTOR WITH THE XOOPS CORE DOWNLOAD, AND PRE-CONFIGURE MAINFILE.PHP TO IMPLEMENT THIS MODULE SO THAT NEW USERS DON'T HAVE TO FIGURE ANYTHING OUT.

* I was shouting respectfully and in good humour of course :) but please, can we not abandon this policy of 'no modules bundled with the core' in the interests of sanity new users? Please? It makes sense to include Protector, doesn't it? It would take about 5 minutes to do, wouldn't it?

Edit: My suggestions are a bit off base from the context of Herve's initial post, because I didn't read it carefully. Sorry! Anyway, I'll leave it here on the odd chance someone reads it :)

Definitely need to prepare XOOPS for php 5 - we are starting to see some hosting providers upgrade already. I suspect you'll see a fairly big shift towards 5 when 6 arrives.

One advantage of VPS: You can stick to 4, if you want to! If your provider is uncooperative, suggest you try Futurehosting.biz.

b) anyone has any recommendations for the follow modules? I'm currently developing a website using XOOPS 2.0.16.

Sure do. Please download the Guide to Essential XOOPS modules. Please note that this is a draft document that will be put out for community input shortly, but it should give you a starting point.

Are you using 2.0.16? From memory, it does not work with older versions of xoops.

IMHO:

* We need a code of conduct (eg. XOOPSetiqquete).
* It should form the basis for moderation policy and be consistently applied .

I understand that the XOOPS Foundation offers some kind of legal protection mechanism for developers of the system against personal liability etc, but you'd have to ask Herko for the details on exactly what it covers/how it works.

With regard to user behaviour, I think all XOOPS could do is to make it clear in the terms of service/membership disclaimer that members are 100% responsible/liable for their own posts.

I don't agree with a blanket statement that 'xoops will cooperate with any law enforcement agency'. Privacy (laws) should be respected, also. Personal info shouldn't be handed out unless a valid court order [or equivalent] is presented.

Edited to shorten.

My other suggestion is to keep posts short
